The semi-detached century home\u2014purchased for $750,000 in 2015\u2014had three bedrooms, two bathrooms, stained-glass windows and original wood floors. What it didn\u2019t have was space: the kitchen was small, and brothers Jack and Charlie dutifully shared a single bedroom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Things got even tighter when John began working from home during the pandemic. He took over Sarah\u2019s office, which only deepened his long-held desire for larger living quarters. \u201cEach of us needed more quiet space,\u201d John says. He got in the habit of sending real estate listings to Sarah, who\u2014despite her professional packing skills\u2014wasn\u2019t as inclined to move.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>MORE:\u00a0This family left their Toronto bungalow for rural Nova Scotia<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\">Her position softened during a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> to Haliburton, Ontario, in the summer of 2020. The Grants\u2019 cottage was near a driving range, and they took full advantage of the breathing room. \u201cWe used to see friends indoors all the time,\u201d Sarah says. \u201cThen, during the pandemic, we focused more on outdoor activities, like biking. <span class=\"s2\">John took the boys golfing every morning<\/span> in Haliburton, and they just loved it,\u201d Sarah says. The couple also knew they had limited time before their sons started objecting to bunking together in Toronto.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The Grants initially considered renting out their Toronto house and temporarily moving to a waterfront property in Huntsville, a cottage town in Muskoka, but Sarah wasn\u2019t sold. \u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful vacation spot, but it didn\u2019t feel like a year-round fit,\u201d she says. They briefly entertained a renovation, but by that point, Sarah was making peace with the idea of selling. \u201cI always said I would move <i>for<\/i> something, not just to leave Toronto,\u201d she says. \u201cI just hadn\u2019t found the place that made me want to go.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1237703\" style=\"width: 3011px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"wp-image-1237703 size-full lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/MMRSarahJohnKelowna4906_MelissaRenwick-e1656419203770.jpg\" alt=\"Sarah Grant and her husband, John, recently purchased a house in Upper Mission, in Kelowna, British Columbia.\" width=\"3001\" height=\"1408\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sarah Grant and her husband, John, recently purchased a house in Upper Mission, in Kelowna, British Columbia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_hunt\"><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>The hunt<\/b><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">The city\u2019s hold on the Grants <span class=\"s2\">loosened when a friend returned from a trip to Kelowna, B.C., in the summer of 2020 and raved about its beaches, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> <\/span>family-friendliness and mountain views. With their Toronto dream on its last legs, Sarah bought John a book called <i>Houses by the Shore<\/i> for Christmas. One of the featured homes was located on the nearby Scarborough Bluffs, which led them to scout out the area\u2019s homes. None made the grade.<span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The couple finally asked their Toronto agent to put them in touch with a realtor in Kelowna. Incredibly, the first listing sent their way turned out to be the winner. \u201cJohn took one look and said, \u2018This is it,\u2019\u2009\u201d Sarah says. \u201cIt\u201d was a five-plus-one-bedroom, four-bathroom detached home overlooking Okanagan Lake. The property was everything the Grants could ask for: it had a four-car garage, a primary bedroom with a walk-in closet and ensuite bathroom, a gorgeous modern kitchen, a large <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> room and a small swimming pool.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The neighbourhood was located in a stellar school district, close to bakeries and sushi (Sarah\u2019s favourite) and within a 20-minute drive of three wineries and tennis and soccer facilities. The only trade-off was walkability\u2014the house sat on a particularly steep part of the escarpment. That didn\u2019t stop John and Sarah from entering a successful bid of $2.3 million in January. Soon after, Sarah found herself expertly packing up her beloved Toronto digs. In early May, the family\u2014and, separately, their belongings\u2014made the cross-country trek to Kelowna by car.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The Grants have had no problem meeting new families. \u201cIt seems like everyone I know has a friend here,\u201d Sarah says. It\u2019s been hard for them to believe their new life in Kelowna isn\u2019t a vacation. This summer, the Grants are planning beach visits, exploratory weekend trips and plenty of barbecues with new friends.
