United States Securities and Exchange Commission member Hester Peirce is called Crypto Mom for her steadfast support for digital assets, and Time magazine crowned Vitalik Buterin the Prince of Crypto. When Ruja Ignatova was bestowed the title \u201cCryptoqueen\u201d in a 2019 true-crime podcast, however, it was with far less endearment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ignatova was the creator of OneCoin, a purported cryptocurrency that proved to be a Ponzi scheme. According to law enforcement, her OneCoin Ltd. has defrauded more than 3 million investors of more than $4 billion since 2014. Her company has also been accused of bribing the presidents of Serbia and Bulgaria, among other things.<\/p>\n<p>Now Ignatova can add \u201cmost wanted\u201d to her titular stylings, thanks to the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/wanted\/topten\">placed<\/a> her on its top-ten list Thursday and will <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/contact-us\/field-offices\/newyork\/news\/press-releases\/fbi-offers-100000-reward-for-capture-of-ten-most-wanted-fugitive-cryptoqueen\">pay<\/a> up to $100,000 for information leading to her arrest. According to the FBI, Ignatova was last known to be in Athens. That was in 2017. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">There will be a press conference today at 11am at 26 Federal Plaza to announce the addition of Ruja Ignatova, a.k.a. \u2018Cryptoqueen\u2019, to the FBI\u2019s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list for allegedly defrauding investors of more than $4 billion through the OneCoin cryptocurrency company<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 US Attorney SDNY (@SDNY<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SDNYnews\/status\/1542503369079771136?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 30, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\nIgnatova recently <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-05-12\/onecoin-cryptoqueen-named-among-europe-s-most-wanted-fugitives?sref=323RPL5z\">counted<\/a> among Europol&#8217;s most wanted as well, although she is no longer on that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eumostwanted.eu\/de#\/de\/ignatova-ruja\">list<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Related: Is education the key to curbing the rise of scammy, high-APY projects?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ignatova grew up in Germany and holds a PhD in economics. In her heyday, the ethnic Bulgarian was known for her elegant attire and fancy parties. She attracted a crowd of over 3,000 to Wembley Arena in London to hear her speak in 2016, even though suspicions about her activities were already common knowledge by that time. <\/p>\n<p>Since then, OneCoin has been the subject of a class-action suit and her <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-50417908\">brother<\/a> and associates have been brought to trial. The world has taken note of the drama inherent in the case. Kate Winslet is reportedly involved\u00a0in a film based on the experiences of a OneCoin investor.
