DC FanDome is just over a week away, and we\u2019re expecting that virtual convention will reveal some news<\/a> about director Matt Reeves<\/strong>\u2018 hugely anticipated upcoming superhero film The Batman<\/strong><\/em>. But in the meantime, that film\u2019s co-writer has spoken about how the new movie is going to deal with Bruce Wayne\u2019s trauma.
<\/br><\/span><\/p>\n

In an interview with Den of Geek, The Batman<\/em> co-writer Mattson Tomlin<\/strong>\u00a0talked about how Robert Pattinson<\/strong>\u2018s version of The Dark Knight will be different than the Christian Bale or Ben Affleck iterations of the character.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the early days,\u201d he said. \u201cI think that, first of all, it\u2019s a younger version than the most recent versions that we\u2019ve seen.\u00a0I think that Matt Reeves as a filmmaker, if you look at any of his work, whether or not it\u2019s\u00a0Let Me In<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0Cloverfield\u00a0<\/em>or the\u00a0Planet of the Apes<\/em>\u00a0movies<\/a>, he\u2019s always coming from a point of emotion. It\u2019s never the big action thing. It\u2019s always, what is this character\u2019s soul?\u00a0I think that really looking at Batman as somebody who has gone through this trauma, and then everything that he\u2019s doing is then a reaction to that, rather than shy away from that, I think this film leans into that in some very fun and surprising ways. I think that\u2019s all I can say without getting yelled at.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the past, Pattinson has talked about how \u201cBatman\u2019s not a hero,\u201d leading us to wonder what his take on this character might be. In another interview, he explained part of the reason he took the role was to put his own specific spin on this legendary character who\u2019s been played several times before: \u201cYou\u2019ve seen this sort of lighter version, you\u2019ve seen a kind of jaded version, a kind of more animalistic version,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd the puzzle of it becomes quite satisfying, to think: Where\u2019s my opening?\u201d<\/p>\n

Reeves has previously said that this iteration of Batman\/Bruce Wayne will be \u201cmajorly struggling,\u201d and Tomlin\u2019s comments seem to hammer home the idea that this could be a far more raw, and potentially even more unhinged version of the character than we\u2019ve seen before. So far, I think Michael Keaton might hold the crown in terms of portraying the character as slightly deranged. (Val Kilmer\u2019s Wayne regularly interrogated his own trauma, but was more sensitive about it than Keaton\u2019s manic performance.) But it certainly sounds like Pattinson could give him a run for his money in The Batman<\/em>, and we\u2019ll find out when the film arrives in theaters (maybe?) on October 1<\/strong>, 2021<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
