\n Netflix, the BBC and Britbox have all removed episodes of the series<\/a> \u201cLittle Britain\u201d from their libraries because of sketches involving blackface.<\/p>\n

The BBC show, which premiered in 2003 and was written by and stars Matt Lucas and David Walliams, was pulled from Netflix on Friday, according to Variety, which adds that the other two networks yanked the content this week. All three streamers also removed the comedia<\/a>ns\u2019 follow-up 2010 film \u201cCome Fly With Me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of historical programming available on BBC iPlayer which we regularly review,\u201d a BBC spokesperson told Variety. \u201cTimes have changed since \u2018Little Britain\u2019 first aired, so it is not currently available on BBC iPlayer.\u201d<\/p>\n

The series and film have featured several controversial characters, including a black woman named Desiree DeVere, played by Walliams in full makeup, and a Pakistani airline worker named Taaj, performed by Lucas. In April, the creators were slapp<\/a>ed on social media for a telethon appearance in which they seemed to poke fun of a theory that people eating bats in China sparked the coronavirus pandemic. \u201cLittle Britain have done blackface and yellowface, so should I be surprised they opened with an Eating Bat joke? No\u2026\u201d said one Twitter commenter.<\/p>\n

Lucas, 46, has previously expressed regret for some of his portrayals, which have received renewed criticism in light of Black Lives Matter protests worldwide in the aftermath of George Floyd\u2018s May 25 death while in Minneapolis police custody.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I could go back and do Little Britain again, I wouldn\u2019t make those jokes about transvestites. I wouldn\u2019t play black characters,\u201d the \u201cBridesmaids\u201d actor said in a 2017 interview. \u201cBasically, I wouldn\u2019t make that show now. It would upset people. We made a more cruel kind of comedy than I\u2019d do now.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cLittle Britain\u201d comics aren\u2019t the only ones who have recently been criticized for performing in blackface. \u201cThe Tonight Show\u201d host and \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d alum Jimmy Fallon repeatedly apologized \u2014 saying he is \u201cnot a racist\u201d \u2014 after a 2000 \u201cSNL\u201d sketch resurfaced in which he played Chris Rock while wearing blackface.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had to really examine myself in the mirror this week because a story came out about me on \u2018SNL\u2019 doing an impression of Chris Rock in blackface,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I was horrified. Not of people trying to \u2018cancel\u2019 me or cancel this show, which is scary enough. The thing that haunted me the most was, how do I say I love this person?\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
