The menu key is also sometimes called the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lication key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some smaller keyboards\u2014for example, laptop keyboards\u2014omit the menu key to save space. Other smaller keyboards omit the right Windows key and leave the menu key between the right Alt and Ctrl keys.<\/p>\n<p>Either way, if your keyboard has a menu key, it\u2019ll be to the left of your right Ctrl key. It doesn\u2019t have the word \u201cmenu\u201d printed on it\u2014it has a little picture that looks like a menu. This picture isn\u2019t standardized and will look different on different keyboards. Sometimes it shows a small pointer hovering above a menu and sometimes it looks like a stylized menu\u2014a square or rectangle with some horizontal lines inside it.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_the_Menu_Key_For\"><\/span>What\u2019s the Menu Key For?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The menu key opens a context menu for your current application. It\u2019s basically like right-clicking on your selection in the application.<\/p>\n<p>Try it\u2014press the menu key while viewing this web page and you\u2019ll see your web browser\u2019s context menu, just as if you had right-clicked on the page.<\/p>\n<p>This is key is useful if you don\u2019t have a mouse or don\u2019t have a mouse with a right mouse button. It works in many different applications. Press the menu key, use the arrow keys to select an option, and press Enter to activate it. Select text or other elements with keyboard shortcuts and press the menu key to activate context menu options\u2014all without your hands leaving the keyboard.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft is now <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/6\/18\/18683333\/microsoft-office-key-keyboards-support\">talking about<\/a> converting this key into an Office key to match the Windows key. Most PC users likely don\u2019t touch this key, which explains why Microsoft is floating the idea of changing it. You can press Shift+F10 in most applications to open a context menu. It\u2019s basically the same thing as the menu key.<\/p>\n<p>This doesn\u2019t work in every application, however\u2014it depends on the applications. If nothing happens in the application you\u2019re using, try Ctrl+Shift+F10.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Remap_the_Menu_Key\"><\/span>How to Remap the Menu Key<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The menu key isn\u2019t quite as annoying as the Windows key, which can take you out of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s and other full-screen applications if you accidentally press it. However, you may want to change the behavior of the menu key and have it do something more useful. After all, that\u2019s prime keyboard real estate going to waste if you\u2019re not using the key.<\/p>\n<p>We like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/randyrants\/sharpkeys\/releases\">SharpKeys<\/a> for quickly remapping a key to another key. You can remap keys in the Windows Registry, but it\u2019s much more complicated. You can also click \u201cType Key\u201d and press the menu key\u2014as we mentioned above, it\u2019s sometimes called the \u201capplication key,\u201d as it is here.<\/p>\n<p>In the right pane, select whatever key you want to remap the menu key to. You\u2019ll now have to close the SharpKeys window and then either reboot your PC or sign out and sign back in. Your changes will take effect when you next sign in.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to change what the key does or undo your changes, open SharpKeys once again, select your rule, and use the \u201cEdit\u201d or \u201cDelete\u201d button to modify or delete it. You can use AutoHotkey to write a quick little script that will listen for the menu key and perform other actions when you press it.
