Instead it appears that Instagram is going to continue the Facebook tradition of \u2018If You Can\u2019t Beat It, Copy It.\u2019 And goddamn, it\u2019s copying the hell out of TikTok.<\/p>\n<p>The mighty plan? To make every video posted on the platform a Reel. Having two different flavors of video on one platform is kinda confusing. But when you take a step back from this, the story changes.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, this move seems part of a deliberate strategy to ape TikTok as much as humanly possible in order to keep users on Meta\u2019s app.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at the stats. On a purely numerical level, Instagram is ahead of TikTok. The former app has around <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/272014\/global-social-networks-ranked-by-number-of-users\/\">1.4 billion users<\/a>, while the latter 1 billion.<\/p>\n<p>On the surface, this looks good. But that doesn\u2019t tell the full story. The real problem is who\u2019s using the apps \u2014 and how they\u2019re using them.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the number of Gen Z TikTok users <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forrester.com\/blogs\/weekly-usage-of-tiktok-surpasses-instagram-among-us-gen-z-youth\/\">surpassed that of Instagram<\/a>. To reframe that, Meta\u2019s app is becoming unfashionable amongst the youth.<\/p>\n<p>This is not only an issue because it hampers future growth, but because Instagram was meant to be Meta\u2019s pathway to young people, as Facebook has become <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2018\/feb\/12\/is-facebook-for-old-people-over-55s-flock-in-as-the-young-leave\">the social network for old folks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And while marketers <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thesmallbusinessblog.net\/tiktok-vs-instagram\/\">still prefer Instagram over TikTok<\/a>, this won\u2019t last long.. Currently, the average time spent on Instagram globally is 28 minutes. On TikTok this clocks in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thesmallbusinessblog.net\/how-much-time-do-people-spend-on-social-media\/\">at 52 minutes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Those are levels of engagement that can\u2019t be ignored. The reason marketers aren\u2019t falling over themselves to move to the platform is simply because they don\u2019t fully understand it yet.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of marketing is a conservative industry, always on the lookout for a sure thing. While there are easy-to-follow best practices for Instagram, the same doesn\u2019t currently exist for TikTok.<\/p>\n<p>But it will. And when it does, it\u2019s inevitable that marketers \u2014 and their money \u2014 will flow into TikTok.<\/p>\n<p>With all this bubbling in the background, it\u2019s hard to see Instagram making every video on its platform a Reel <em>not<\/em> being a response to TikTok\u2019s burgeoning influence.<\/p>\n<p>Effectively, Meta is panicking. Its main competitor is attracting a younger audience that spends far more time on the app than its own.<\/p>\n<p>In a world where visionaries were held in high esteem, this would be a moment where Instagram experiments and tries out new ideas in order to draw users back.<\/p>\n<p>But this isn\u2019t that world.
