It counts the United States as its largest market.<\/p>\n<p>TikTok\u00a0Chief Executive Shou Zi Chew told senators in\u00a0the\u00a0letter the short video app was working with Oracle on \u201cnew advanced data security controls that we hope to finalize in the near future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last month,\u00a0TikTok\u00a0said it had completed migrating US users\u2019\u00a0information\u00a0to servers at Oracle but it was still using US and Singapore data centers for backup.<\/p>\n<p>TikTok\u2019s letter acknowledged that China-based employees \u201ccan have access to\u00a0TikTok\u00a0US user data subject to a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of robust cybersecurity controls and authorization approval protocols overseen by our US-based security team.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/tiktok-ceo.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"TikTok Chief Executive Shou Zi Chew, left, told lawmakers he hopes to finalize security controls in the near future.\" class=\"wp-image-22885503\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/tiktok-ceo.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/tiktok-ceo.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/tiktok-ceo.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>TikTok Chief Executive Shou Zi Chew, left, told lawmakers he hopes to finalize security controls in the near future.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">WireImage<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>TikTok\u00a0said it\u00a0expected\u00a0\u201cto delete US users\u2019 protected data from our own systems and fully pivot to Oracle cloud servers located in the US\u201d<\/p>\n<p>TikTok\u00a0has sent a\u00a0response to the senators\u2019 letter,\u00a0a company spokesperson said in a statement to Reuters. \u201cWe look forward to connecting with members of Congress to discuss the substance of our letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>TikTok\u00a0is working to build US-based engineering capacity to further reduce the need for data access across regions, the spokesperson added.<\/p>\n<p>Senator Blackburn,\u00a0of Tennessee,\u00a0said\u00a0TikTok\u00a0\u201cshould have come clean from the start but instead tried to shroud their work in secrecy.\u201d\u00a0She said\u00a0TikTok\u00a0needs to \u201ccome back and testify before Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0TikTok\u00a0letter came\u00a0nearly two years after a US national security panel ordered ByteDance to divest\u00a0TikTok\u00a0because of fears that US user data could be passed on to China\u2019s communist government.<\/p>\n<p>That order was not enforced after Joe Biden succeeded Donald Trump as US president last year. The panel, however, known as the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), is still conducting a national security review of the company, according to the letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know we are among the most scrutinized platforms from a security standpoint and we aim to remove any doubt about the security of US user data,\u201d the letter said.<\/p>\n<p>TikTok\u00a0has said in the past that employees in China have data access to US user data. In a 2020 blogpost Roland Cloutier,\u00a0TikTok\u2019s chief information security officer, said, \u201cOur goal is to minimize data access across regions so that, for example, employees in the APAC region, including China, would have very minimal access to user data from the EU and US.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A BuzzFeed story in June showed ByteDance engineers in China had access to US data between September 2021 and January 2022.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Shared_algorithms\"><\/span>Shared algorithms<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The letter also said \u201cByteDance developed the algorithms for both Douyin and\u00a0TikTok, and therefore some of the same underlying basic technology building blocks are utilized by both products.\u201d\u00a0TikTok\u00a0is known as Douyin in China.<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0TikTok\u2019s business logic, algorithm, integration and deployment of systems is specific to the\u00a0TikTok\u00a0application and separate from Douyin, the letter said.<\/p>\n<p>Reuters previously reported that while the code for the app, which determines the look and feel of\u00a0TikTok, has been separated from Douyin, the server code was still partially shared across other ByteDance products. The server code provides basic functionality of the apps such as data storage, algorithms for moderating and recommending content and the management of user profiles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese government took a stake and a board seat in a key ByteDance entity in 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>TikTok\u00a0explained in its letter to the senators that its acquisition of 1% of Beijing Douyin Information Service Ltd was necessary to obtain a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> license in China.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
