Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a> popular with teenagers was actually a stealth tool used by the Communist \u00adChinese to spy on Americans.<\/p>\n<p>No longer.<\/p>\n<p>Brendan Carr, a commissioner at the Federal Communications Commission, hit me with some revelations that appear to confirm the worst fears of Trump and his national security team about the app and how it\u2019s being used by China to gather data on American citizens to spy on us.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, Trump wanted to ban TikTok, so of course President Biden reversed course. But if Sleepy Joe cares about the Chinese threat to our national security, he should put aside his Trump animus and listen to what Carr has to say about the possible dangers posed by something that could be sucking the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> life out of \u00adunsuspecting people for nefarious purposes.<\/p>\n<p>Again, I was a skeptic. What could the Chinese do with information gleaned from dance videos and comedy sketches? Like all of our \u201cfree\u201d social media platforms, TikTok siphons swaths of information from users to make money, which is why I get so many online targeted ads based on my search history.<\/p>\n<p>Carr, appointed by Trump to the FCC, lays out a pretty compelling case that unlike US big tech firms, profits aren\u2019t the only motivating factor in TikTok\u2019s business model.<\/p>\n<p>All this user data \u2014 from searches to downloads to anything touched by the app \u2014 feed the Chinese Communist surveillance state, he believes, which wants to supplant our dominance as a world economic leader.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Answering_to_the_CCP\"><\/span>Answering to the CCP<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You see, TikTok is owned by a Chinese holding company called ByteDance. Unlike executives and board members at US tech giants, its management priority isn\u2019t serving the interests of shareholders. It answers to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and, ultimately, its power-hungry supreme leader, Xi Jinping.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Little background on China Inc.: It doesn\u2019t matter how many US investors are involved in Chinese companies (ByteDance has significant US private equity and VC investments). The commissars \u00adreally run the show.<\/p>\n<p>A Good example is Alibaba, China\u2019s equivalent of Amazon. Company founder Jack Ma attracted significant US investor interest for a 2014 IPO that appeared on the New York Stock Exchange in one of the most sought-after listings in recent history.<\/p>\n<p>But for all the US fanfare, the commissars never loosened their grip on Alibaba or Ma himself. IPO disclosure documents stated as much, warning that the Chinese government \u201cexercises significant control over China\u2019s economic growth .\u2009.\u2009. providing preferential treatment to particular industries or companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following the public offering, Ma went on to become one of the world\u2019s richest people, worth about $26 billion, a philanthropist and activist who had a tendency of publicly saying stuff that pissed off China\u2019s authoritarian rulers.<\/p>\n<p>He also suffered a similar fate as others who crossed their business partners in the politburo and suddenly and without explanation disappeared; he became the subject of scorn and ridicule in China\u2019s state-run media, and a target of China\u2019s regulators.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/GettyImages-1239584177.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"TikTok\" class=\"wp-image-22902289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/GettyImages-1239584177.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=2048 2048w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/GettyImages-1239584177.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1536 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/GettyImages-1239584177.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/GettyImages-1239584177.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>TikTok has over a billion active users on the app.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">SOPA Images\/LightRocket via Gett<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Maybe he ended up in one of the country\u2019s infamous gulags or maybe he was re-educated under less onerous conditions. Either way, now that Ma has been spotted out and about, he just keeps his mouth shut.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Again, ByteDance is not a public company so there is no regulatory mandate to provide specific legal disclosures about the commissars\u2019 role in its operations.<\/p>\n<p>Based on public statements by TikTok officials, that role would appear minimal. Its servers were secure. Team Biden appears to have bought ByteDance\u2019s explanation.<\/p>\n<p>That hasn\u2019t assuaged many \u00adGOPers in the national security and telecom apparatus. Carr, a long-time telecom lawyer and policy wonk, kept looking for ways to rein in the company. His worst fears received some confirmation recently with a report from BuzzFeed <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> that obtained recordings showing how China is allegedly all over TikTok\u2019s US user-information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything is seen in China,\u201d one TikTok official explained.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%98Security_standards\"><\/span>\u2018Security standards\u2019<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Oddly, TikTok really didn\u2019t deny the report. If the GOP regains control of Congress, hearings are likely.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, Carr also wants Sleepy Joe to step in and stop what he believes is China\u2019s blatant data theft before it\u2019s too late \u2014 even if that would require our famously obtuse commander in chief to wake up and smell the data breaches.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
