A full-body squeeze is safer than shaking hands when it comes to avoiding the deadly embrace of the coronavirus, according to Belgian virologist Marc Van Ranst. His suggestion comes with Belgium announcing Monday that its citizens may see 10 other people per week as the country relaxes its nationwide lockdown, reports the Brussels Times.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are allowed to hold each other,\u201d says the epidemiologist at the Rega Institute for Medical Research, who recognizes quarantiners\u2019 need to display affection as they emerge from their months-long isolation. However, Dr. Van Ranst advises against \u201cdifficult handshakes,\u201d which allow hands to \u201ccome into contact with each other and with the environment\u201d and increase \u201cthe chance of the spread.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShaking hands at the conference table \u2014 you can no longer do that anymore,\u201d the KU Leuven University researcher says of old-school skin-to-skin salutations.<\/p>\n

Dr. Van Ranst\u2019s assessment could come as a relief to those struggling with how to politely decline clasping hands amid COVID-19, but don\u2019t want to resort to \u201cfoot shakes\u201d or other odd interim physical salutations.<\/p>\n

But keep in mind, he adds, that this is not a prescript<\/a>ion to go on an office hugging spree. \u201cKeep the hug for the people you have an affinity with,\u201d says Dr. Van Ranst, cheekily adding that people probably haven\u2019t missed the \u201cobligatory handshake.\u201d<\/p>\n

And US Surgeon General<\/a> Jerome Adams claims that the \u201celbow bump\u201d remains the safest way to greet someone, although the WHO argues against the gesture as it puts its practitioners within 3 feet of each other.<\/p>\n
