But, you can install the free Java utility and access this file format on your PC. We\u2019ll show you the process to do that.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Is_a_JAR_File_and_How_Can_You_Open_One\"><\/span>What Is a JAR File and How Can You Open One?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>JAR stands for Java Archive, which is an archive comprising multiple files. Developers can make apps and other items in Java and save those files as JAR. It\u2019s worth keeping in mind, though, that JAR files contain executable code making them <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/137270\/50-file-extensions-that-are-potentially-dangerous-on-windows\/\">potentially dangerous file types. Make sure you trust the source of your JAR file before running it.<\/p>\n<p>To run a JAR file on your Windows PC, you have to install the free Java utility. Then, you can double-click your JAR file to launch it. You can also extract the files out of a JAR archive using a free app like WinRAR, as we\u2019ll explain below.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_1_Check_if_Java_Is_Already_Installed_on_Your_PC\"><\/span>Step 1: Check if Java Is Already Installed on Your PC<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s worth checking if you have Java installed on your PC already, and if so, you can skip the Step 2 below.<\/p>\n<p>To do that, first, launch the Run box by pressing Windows+R.
