company has open-sourced an AI model that translates over 200 languages \u2014 many of which aren\u2019t supported by existing systems.<\/p>\n<p>The research is part of a Meta initiative launched href=\"https:\/\/ai.facebook.com\/blog\/teaching-ai-to-translate-100s-of-spoken-and-written-languages-in-real-time\/\">No Language Left Behind<\/a>, and the AI modeling techniques we used from NLLB are helping us make high quality translations on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a> and Instagram for languages spoken by billions of people around the world,\u201d Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post.<\/p>\n<p>NLLB focuses on lower-resource languages, such as Maori or Maltese. Most people in the world speak these languages, but they lack the training data that AI translations typically require.<\/p>\n<p>Meta\u2019s new model was designed to overcome this challenge.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, the researchers first interviewed speakers of underserved languages to understand their needs. Meta has also<\/span> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mail.google.com\/mail\/u\/0\/#search\/meta\/FMfcgzGpGdnzMxGwNjLPRjbKwsdzdPlZ\">open-sourced all their benchmarks, data scripts, and models<\/a> to support further research.<\/p>\n<p>This, of course, could also benefit Meta.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Open-sourced_for_all\"><\/span>Open-sourced for all<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Zuckerberg\u2019s relentless drive for growth has recently run into obstacles. In February, Facebook lost daily users for the first time in its 18-year history.<\/p>\n<p>If Meta can improve the quality of its translations, that can make its <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>s attractive to a broader user base.<\/p>\n<p>Inevitably, the company anticipates the research playing a big role in the metaverse \u2014 where <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/06\/20\/cto-racism-could-ruin-metaverse-if-tech-doesnt-improve-diversity-now.html\">concerns about inclusion are growing<\/a>. But it can also benefit the business\u2019 existing apps.<\/p>\n<p>Translation issues have long caused problems for Meta. In 2017, Israeli police <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2017\/oct\/24\/facebook-palestine-israel-translates-good-morning-attack-them-arrest\">arrested a Palestinian<\/a> after Facebook translated a post saying \u201cgood morning\u201d as \u201cattack them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company has also struggled to monitor misinformation and hate speech <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-facebook-languages-insight-idUSKCN1RZ0DW\">in lesser-resourced languages<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The new research could mitigate these risks and improve user experiences. To Meta\u2019s credit, the company has also given rivals a chance to benefit from the work. Open-sourcing the models will also hopefully support speakers of languages that are underserved or under threat.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, what benefits Meta could also benefit humanity.
