Error Code 0x80004005 is no exception, though it does have a few common causes. Here are some things you can try to fix it on either Windows 10 or Windows 11.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Causes_Error_Code_0x80004005\"><\/span>What Causes Error Code 0x80004005?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Most <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly speaking, error code 0x80004005 occurs when Windows cannot access a file or folder. It is usually displayed as \u201cError 0x80004005: Unspecified Error.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here is a non-exhaustive list of the potential causes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your Windows User account does not have ownership of the file or folder or the correct permissions to access it.<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019re attempting to extract or open an encrypted archive file (like a ZIP file) with a program that does not support those files.<\/li>\n<li>Your antivirus is blocking access to the files<\/li>\n<li>A network configuration setting is wrong, or a service is not running, and you cannot connect to another computer or Network-Attached Storage Device (NAS) on the network<\/li>\n<li>Windows Update is broken due to corrupted files<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Despite being more specific than most Windows error messages, Error Code 0x80004005 still has a large number of potential causes and a large number of potential fixes.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Avoid_Archive_File_Errors\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_1\">Avoid Archive File Errors<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Archive Files allow you to do all sorts of neat things, although not all archive files support the same features. You can <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/362339\/how-does-file-compression-work\/\">compress files, bundle up multiple files, encrypt files, or split large files across multiple archive files.<\/p>\n<p>File Explorer can open, create, and extract ZIP files by itself, but that is about it. It cannot handle most other archive file formats, like RARs, 7Zs, or Tarballs. Additionally, most archive files support features like encryption, which locks file access behind a password. File Explorer doesn\u2019t support any of the advanced features offered by archive file formats. You\u2019ll get \u201cError 0x80004005: Unspecified Error\u201d if you attempt to extract an encrypted ZIP file using File Explorer.<\/p>\n<p>The solution is simple: Use a different program that supports encrypted files.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>The Best File Archiving Program for Windows<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are a ton of programs available for managing archive files. Some of them \u2014 like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.7-zip.org\/\">7-Zip<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/peazip.github.io\/\">PeaZip<\/a> \u2014 are completely free. Both are excellent options, and you can\u2019t really go wrong with either.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=204a528a336ede4177fff0d84a044482&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.winzip.com\">WinZip<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rarlab.com\/\">WinRAR<\/a> are the other two standout options, but neither are technically free. WinZip offers a free 30-day trial, after which you need to buy it if you want to keep using it. WinRAR also offers a trial period, but it will continue to let you use it indefinitely after the trial period ends, albeit with some nagging.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Troubleshoot_Windows_Update\"><\/span>Troubleshoot Windows Update<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Error 0x80004005 can also appear while you\u2019re attempting to run a Windows Update. Typically it\u2019ll occur after a Windows update is interrupted by something like a loss of power or an internet outage.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing to try is Windows Update\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/247380\/how-to-fix-windows-update-when-it-gets-stuck\/#autotoc_anchor_1\">built-in troubleshooter. The troubleshooter might be able to resolve whatever is causing the error automatically.<\/p>\n<p>If it fails, you can try manually deleting all of the update files and restarting the update service \u2014 if the error is occurring because of a corrupted download, that should solve the problem.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Repair_Network-Related_Causes\"><\/span>Repair Network-Related Causes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Error Code 0x80004005 crops up most frequently when people are trying to connect to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/746521\/best-nas-network-attached-storage-devices\/\">Network-Attached Storage (NAS), though it does happen in other circumstances. The error is not specific enough to conclusively say what the problem is, but there are a few likely culprits. If you\u2019re running two Windows PCs that you\u2019re trying to connect via your LAN, you should check all of these settings on both computers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>What Is A Local Area Network (LAN)?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Check_Server_Message_Block_SMB_Settings\"><\/span>Check Server Message Block (SMB) Settings<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>SMB is a protocol that lets computers on the same network communicate and function like a client and server. It is most frequently used to enable communication between a computer and a printer, or a computer and a NAS, but it can be used for other things.<\/p>\n<p>There are a few versions of SMB currently in use. SMB version one, or SMBv1, is the oldest standard and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/321072\/how-to-disable-smbv1-and-protect-your-windows-pc-from-attack\/\">isn\u2019t used much anymore for security reasons. SMBv2 and SMBv3 are both in common use still.<\/p>\n<p>If the error is related to an SMB problem, there are a few possibilities:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The SMB service is not running<\/li>\n<li>AllowInsecureGuestAuth is disabled and you\u2019re using a NAS that requires it<\/li>\n<li>The device or service you\u2019re attempting to use requires SMBv1<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Let\u2019s start by checking the status of the SMB service. Open up an elevated Command Prompt, PowerShell, or Windows Terminal, and then run the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>sc.exe qc lanmanworkstation<\/pre>\n<p>You\u2019ll get something very similar to the below output:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-812331\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/smb-autostart.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"A PowerShell window confirming that the SMB services should automatically start.\" width=\"650\" height=\"299\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>If \u201cSTART_TYPE\u201d is not set to AUTO_START, you need to enable it. Run the next two command in the same window as you did the last command.<\/p>\n<p>sc.exe config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser\/mrxsmb10\/mrxsmb20\/nsi<br \/>sc.exe config mrxsmb20 start= auto<\/p>\n<p>You will see <code>[SC] ChangeServiceConfig SUCCESS<\/code> if everything went well.<\/p>\n<p>If that didn\u2019t work, the next thing to try is allowing insecure guest logins. Windows blocks guest logins to network devices using SMB2 by default. You might need to disable that setting \u2014 it isn\u2019t ideal from a security standpoint, but it is a fairly common thing with consumer equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Fire up Registry Editor (RegEdit) and then navigate to <code>HKLM\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\LanmanWorkstation\\Parameters<\/code> using the menu on the left, or just paste the path into the address bar.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-812756\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/path-address.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"RegEdit is opened to the folder where &quot;AllowInsecureGuestAuth&quot; should be.\" width=\"650\" height=\"407\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The DWORD you\u2019re looking for is named AllowInsecureGuestAuth \u2014 if it isn\u2019t there, you\u2019ll need to create it.<\/p>\n<p>Right-click empty space, mouse to \u201cNew,\u201d then click \u201cDWORD (32-bit) Value.\u201d Name it \u201cAllowInsecureGuestAuth\u201d and set the value to 1.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-813119\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Change-DWORD-value-to.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"407\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Try doing whatever gave you Error 0x80004005 originally after you set the value to 1. There is one other likely possibility related to SMB.<\/p>\n<p>It is possible that the network device you\u2019re trying to connect to requires that you use SMBv1, the oldest version of the standard. It is disabled by default in Windows 10 and Windows 11, but it is still possible to enable it.<\/p>\n<p>Hit the Start button, type \u201cwindows features\u201d into the search box, then hit Enter or click \u201cOpen.\u201d The Windows Features window hasn\u2019t migrated to the Settings app yet, so if you want to navigate to it, head to: Control Panel &gt; Programs &gt; Turn Windows Features On or Off.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-813126\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/windows-features-search-click-open.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"372\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Scroll down until you see \u201cSMB 1.0\/CIFS File Sharing Support.\u201d Click the little plus button, then tick \u201cSMB 1.0\/CIFS Client,\u201d \u201cSMB 1.0\/CIFS Server,\u201d and <em>untick <\/em>\u201cSMB 1.0\/CIFS Automatic Removal.\u201d Then click \u201cOK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-813233\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/click-SMB-Client-1-then-click-OK-1.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Tick both the SMB 1.0 Client and Server boxes, and untick the automatic removal option.\" width=\"650\" height=\"575\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Windows will automatically download the files and prompt you to restart your computer. Check and see if that worked \u2014 if it didn\u2019t, don\u2019t worry. There are more things you can try. Just remember to disable SMB 1.0\/CIFS again before you continue. There is no point in leaving it on unless you need it, and it is a potential security vulnerability<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Network_Discovery_and_Sharing_Settings\"><\/span>Network Discovery and Sharing Settings<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Networked devices \u2014 like network-attached storage (NAS) or, worse yet, a network printer \u2014 are often pretty finicky. Network discovery or sharing settings are often at fault. Here is what you need to do rule out these settings as the source of your problem.<\/p>\n<p>Open up Network Settings. Click the Start button, type \u201cadvanced sharing options\u201d into the search bar, then click \u201cOpen\u201d or hit Enter.
