If there\u2019s someone else nearby with another MacBook, then you may be able to borrow some charge and keep your laptop alive longer.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Works_With_Some_USB-C_Models\"><\/span>Works With Some USB-C Models<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>MacBook to MacBook charging should work in some capacity on most MacBook models that use USB-C charging. <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le has used USB-C charging on its MacBooks for many years now, and there are reports that this works on both older Intel models and newer Apple Silicon (M1, M2, and variants) machines.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-771615 size-full\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/macbook_3.5mm.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"The ports on the side of a MacBook.\" width=\"650\" height=\"314\" data-credittext=\"Apple\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">Apple<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The way it\u2019s\u00a0<em>supposed<\/em> to work is that the first person to plug in (using a quality USB-C to USB-C cable that can handle the necessary power) is the one who receives the charge, while the second MacBook connected will be the one providing the power. Sometimes, though (like when one Mac is on the lock screen, or powering up) things behave erratically and this works in reverse.<\/p>\n<p>Which USB-C port you use shouldn\u2019t matter, but if things aren\u2019t working as expected we found that cycling between ports until the \u201cright\u201d MacBook reports that it is charging was sometimes necessary.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Some_Things_to_Remember\"><\/span>Some Things to Remember<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We tested this out with two MacBooks: a 2020 13-inch M1 MacBook Air and a 2021 16-inch M1 Max MacBook Pro. The power demands of these machines are quite different, with the M1 MacBook Air shipping with a 30w power adapter while the M1 Max MacBook Pro comes with a 140w adapter.<\/p>\n<p>The MacBook Pro has far greater power demands than the MacBook Air, but even though this was the case macOS still reported that the Pro was charging via the Air. \u00a0This doesn\u2019t mean that the Pro is sucking down up to 140w from the Air, and you shouldn\u2019t expect to charge a thirsty laptop this way.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-813023\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/macbook_pro_charging.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"MacBook Pro reports it is charging using a MacBook Air\" width=\"650\" height=\"407\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Much of the overhead provided by the 140w charger allows the MacBook Pro to use fast charging, which you won\u2019t be doing while connected to something like a MacBook Air.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-813022\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/macbook_pro_not_charging.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"MacBook Pro not charging warning\" width=\"650\" height=\"383\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>When we tried this, macOS occasionally reported that \u201cThe battery is not charging\u201d before shifting to charging mode. We didn\u2019t see the battery percentage on the MacBook Pro rise after extended use, but we didn\u2019t see it fall either. Conversely, the battery percentage on the Pro fell much quicker while the Air was charging.<\/p>\n<p>What is likely happening is that the Pro is charging very slowly, or simply discharging much slower than it would be otherwise. This might be useful if you have a small amount of charge left and you want to extend what you have (at the cost of another laptop\u2019s battery.)<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_Is_This_Useful\"><\/span>When Is This Useful?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This might be useful in situations where you have two MacBooks and a single charger.
