That may not sound so bad in <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/why-crypto-crash-different-192633348.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the current market<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but for anyone still invested or interested, Telegram is a powerful tool.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper channel-cta\">\n<div class=\"ica-text\">\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Thank_you_for_joining_TNW_Conference_2022\"><\/span>Thank you for joining TNW Conference 2022!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Let the reminiscing commence \u2192<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably, the app\u2019s appeal has endured despite fears it jeopardizes a tenet of cryptocurrencies: security.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_security_complex\"><\/span><b>A security complex<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since its founding in 2013, Telegram has been heavily marketed as privacy-centric.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pavel Durov, the company\u2019s CEO, earned admiration after refusing to give <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/why-russian-mark-zuckerberg-pavel-durov-left-2014-12?r=US&amp;IR=T\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Kremlin user data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from another business he\u2019d founded: VK,\u00a0 the largest social network in Russia. Soon after, Durov fled Russia and launched Telegram.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe had a simple choice: either betray our values or keep our values and leave Russia to try to do something new,\u201d he <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/us-telecoms-mobileworld-telegram\/telegram-app-free-speech-advocate-no-stranger-to-apple-fbi-woes-idUKKCN0VW2CM\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told Reuters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Durov\u2019s story lent credibility to his claims that Telegram is private and secure \u2013 two precious attributes for cryptocurrency advocates. I would do it again without hesitation. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/GUFCjbqDc5\">https:\/\/t.co\/GUFCjbqDc5<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Pavel Durov (@durov) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/durov\/status\/1500909092990341121?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 7, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers have raised alarm about Telegram\u2019s <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyberscoop.com\/telegram-app-security-encryption\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">encryption protocol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/telegram.org\/privacy#:~:text=To%20improve%20the%20security%20of,kept%20for%2012%20months%20maximum.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metadata collection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@thegrugq\/operational-telegram-cbbaadb9013a?ref=hackernoon.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">storage of user data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But their biggest concern involves end-to-end encryption (E2EE).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Telegram chats don\u2019t have E2EE by default \u2014 which means anyone with access to the company\u2019s servers can see the messages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The app does provide an opt-in E2EE \u2013 but only for \u201cSecret Chats,\u201d which disable many platform features. Group chats, which are heavily used in the crypto community, can never be end-to-end encprrypted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cybersecurity experts recommend switching to apps with default E2EE, such as Signal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Web3 challengers are also starting to emerge. In January, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/xx.network\/\">xx.network<\/a>, a company founded by cryptography pioneer David Chaum, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/xx.network\/messenger\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">launched an app<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that promises both E2EE and metadata shredding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTelegram is not only not private \u2013 it is not decentralized,\u201d Ben Werner, the chief engineer of xx network, told TNW.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn theory, the organization that runs Telegram can censor any channel, user, or individual post. The crypto community needs communication tools that are as resistant as [the] networks they are building.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Durov, Telegram\u2019s CEO, has regularly defended his encryption strategy. He argues that E2EE renders many of the platform\u2019s features obsolete.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These features help explain why crypto folk are willing to overlook Telegram\u2019s security shortcomings.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Beyond_chat\"><\/span><b>Beyond chat<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Durov insists that E2EE on Telegram sacrifices usability for security.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chats that aren\u2019t end-to-end encrypted are instead backed up in the company\u2019s cloud storage. Durov described the benefits of this approach in <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tgstat.com\/channel\/@durovschat\/527081\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a post on the platform<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It allows for seamless multi-device sync with access to past chat history, huge group chats and channels, persistent message history, sending large documents and videos, instant media forwarding without reupload, minimizing storage usage on your phone, never losing your messages even if you lose your phone \u2013 and many other great features which decrease bandwidth, battery, and storage usage.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of these features are extremely popular in crypto circles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Channels are used to promote projects in one-way broadcasts to an unlimited number of followers, while groups can function as advertising boards for up to 200,000 viewers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signal, in contrast, restricts group chats to 1,000 members, while WhatsApp limits them to just 256 people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means Telegram users can reach far larger audiences \u2014 particularly given the platform\u2019s<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/core.telegram.org\/bots\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strong support for bots<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Channels also offer further opportunities for monetization. Some traders share exclusive tips in exchange for subscription fees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUsers can participate in crypto projects to update their communities on changes\/progress, and to receive feedback,\u201d said Tony Danjal, the head of tax <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/koinly.io\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Koinly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a cryptocurrency taxation platform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s [also] things like trading signal groups where they can receive buy\/sell signals for specific cryptos.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many Telegram users are prepared to sacrifice security for these benefits \u2013 at least until a compelling web3 alternative emerges.<\/span>\n                        <\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
