This connection meant that it was really important to Storer and Calo to honor the chefs they were representing. \u201cWe really wanted to get it right for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Family_Dinner\"><\/span>Family Dinner<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While there was occasional discord in the kitchen between Carmy (Jeremy Allen White), Sydney (Ayo Edebiri), and the rest of The Beef team, they often got together for \u201cfamily\u201d before they began service. Starting out on the show as a consultant behind the scenes, Matheson\u2019s role was far-removed from his culinary knowledge, but that didn\u2019t mean he wasn\u2019t using it for the show. \u201cWe worked hand-in-hand with the writers and everybody to figure it all out,\u201d Matheson shared. \u201cI would write out the menus and go back and forth with them and then write out the recipes and then we would literally have to train because we wanted everyone to do it for real.\u201d So, some of the dishes seen onscreen are crafted by Matheson and the other culinary experts behind the characters. The task brought out some friendly competition in the costars as she recalled, \u201cJeremy and I were like side by side, getting a little bit competitive with each other. And then after we just were sent off to work in different restaurants.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cooking_for_the_Camera\"><\/span>Cooking for the Camera<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>White\u2019s formally trained Carmy had to appear competent in the kitchen and there were no hand doubles on set, making for long hours on camera with most focus on the cooking tasks at hand. \u201cWe had pretty much a day of just shooting us, and I was really nervous,\u201d the actor admitted. \u201cWhen you\u2019re nervous, hands get a little shaky. And you don\u2019t want your hands to be shaky when you\u2019re holding a super sharp knife and the camera\u2019s on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The actor almost made it out of the show without any injuries from the knife work. \u201cI got too worked up and I forgot what I was doing,\u201d he remembered. \u201cAnd I pressed really hard with a \u2014 thankfully pretty dull \u2014 knife into my fingernail twice. I felt the pain, but for the camera, I was like, \u2018it\u2019s fine.\u2019 And I went down again, but it was happening so fast.
