But what if you don\u2019t want\u00a0<em>every<\/em> folder to sync?<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"iClouds_All-or-Nothing_Approach\"><\/span>iCloud\u2019s All-or-Nothing Approach<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You can enable Desktop &amp; Documents sync by launching System Preferences (System Settings) and clicking on Apple ID followed by the \u201ciCloud\u201d section in the sidebar. Next to \u201ciCloud Drive\u201d will be an \u201cOptions\u201d button, which you can click. Under here you can toggle iCloud Drive for \u201cDesktop &amp; Documents\u201d folders at the top, plus other apps like Shortcuts, Automator, and Maps.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-813018\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/documents_desktop_sync.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Desktop and Documents sync\" width=\"650\" height=\"300\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>With this enabled, launch Finder to see that both the Documents and Desktop folder now appear under the \u201ciCloud\u201d section of the sidebar, beneath your \u201cFavorites\u201d and above the \u201cLocations\u201d section which lists drives and mounted disk images.<\/p>\n<p>Anything you put in your Documents folder or leave on the Desktop will now be sent to iCloud Drive and kept in sync, across devices. You can access these files using the Files app for iOS or iPad, or from another Mac that\u2019s linked to your Apple ID. When you delete or move something from these locations, it disappears from all devices.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-813017\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/icloud_drive_ios.jpg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Access Desktop and Documents using Files on iPhone\" width=\"650\" height=\"381\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not possible to exclude a single folder from this process, which can be a problem if you have a large folder that you want to keep in one of these locations that you don\u2019t want to sync over the cloud. Data stored here will count against your available iCloud storage, so make sure only your most important (and lightweight) documents are sent to the cloud.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Solution_Move_Files_Elsewhere\"><\/span>The Solution: Move Files Elsewhere<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>That means the only way to exclude a file or folder from iCloud sync is to move it elsewhere. Your home folder, accessible under <code>\/Users\/username<\/code>\u00a0is an ideal spot for larger files, and you can drag folders from here to the \u201cFavorites\u201d section in Finder\u2019s sidebar to have quick access to them.<\/p>\n<p>To quickly move a file on macOS, copy it using Command+C then move it using Command+Option+V. Be careful that you don\u2019t simply copy and paste (Command+V) since you\u2019ll be duplicating the file rather than moving it.
