Like, what\u2019s my faith? You\u2019re sort of looking into people\u2019s hearts and saying, \u2018This person who disagrees with me, they\u2019re not mad at me because I got something wrong, they\u2019re not mad at me because they think I\u2019m too liberal, they\u2019re fundamentally in bad faith,&#8217;\u201d Smith said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you say that?\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"\/>\n<p>\u201cYou can tell the difference between someone who disagrees with you and someone who is not operating in good faith,\u201d\u00a0responded Lorenz, who was wearing a mask while Smith was unmasked. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d Smith wondered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on the nature of their question, right? For instance, if they\u2019re coming to you in an honest capacity, and saying, \u2018Hey, I noticed X-Y-Z,\u2019 you\u2019re like, \u2018Oh, OK, I\u2019ll take your feedback,&#8217;\u201d Lorenz said. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"644\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/taylor-lorenz.jpg?w=644\" alt=\"Lorenz, the Washington Post's internet culture beat reporter, has been a lightning rod of controversy.\" class=\"wp-image-22959251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/taylor-lorenz.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1288 1288w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/taylor-lorenz.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=966 966w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/taylor-lorenz.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=644 644w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/taylor-lorenz.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=322 322w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/taylor-lorenz.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 644px) 100vw, 644px\"\/><figcaption>Lorenz, the Washington Post\u2019s internet culture beat reporter, has been a lightning rod for controversy.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cOn every story I write, I hear lots of different perspectives \u2026 but if somebody is coming at you and is making personal attacks, they\u2019re misrepresenting you, they\u2019re kind of actively participating in networked harassment \u2026 retweeting people who are not there for constructive criticism.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cI think you can tell the difference between constructive criticism and not-constructive criticism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith then said Lorenz\u2019s critics may be angry or obnoxious while not necessarily acting in \u201cbad faith.\u201d He suggested that she was \u201cguessing\u201d people\u2019s motives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow could you know?\u201d Smith asked Lorenz.<\/p>\n<p>She replied that it was \u201cquite obvious\u201d who was acting in bad faith, but acknowledged it was \u201csomewhat of a guess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lorenz has been at the center of controversy, particularly over her coverage of social media influencers as well as her criticisms of those who have blasted her stories online.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Lorenz and her then-employer, the Times, were sued by Ariadna Jacob, an influencer talent agent, for defamation.<\/p>\n<p>Jacob alleges in the $6.2 million defamation suit that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/08\/14\/style\/influences-tiktok-management-brittany-broski.html\">an article by Lorenz<\/a> contained \u201cnumerous false and disparaging statements\u201d about Jacob and her businesses, including an accusation that she leaked nude images of one of her clients to \u201cmanipulate him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jacob started leasing out spaces in the mansions of Los Angeles to some of her clients, giving them a place to crash while they created viral videos. <\/p>\n<p>Lorenz\u2019s story claimed that Jacob jacked up the rent on tenants who lived in her influencer house, \u201cKids Next Door,\u201d and exposed the agent\u2019s alleged business practices and relationships with influencers \u2014 claiming that they were harassed over covering rent, not getting paid for their work and getting pressured to produce content daily.<\/p>\n<p>Lorenz was also criticized by journalist Glenn Greenwald and Fox <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> host Tucker Carlson for incorrectly accusing Silicon Valley investor Marc Andreessen of using the \u201cR-word\u201d during a private discussion on the members-only Clubhouse <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; The reporter only reached out to them after the fact, according to the influencers.<\/p>\n<p>Lorenz tweeted that a miscommunication with her editor is what led to the inaccurate line that was included in the initial version of her story \u2014 prompting a backlash that accused the reporter of shirking responsibility and laying the blame elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>The editor who worked the story, David Malitz, was denied a promotion that had been promised to him a short time earlier by the newspaper\u2019s executive editor, Sally Buzbee.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
