href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney and influencer Carrie Jernigan, who often shares legal advice to her 1.2 million followers on TikTok, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@carriejernigan1\/video\/7117317088544296235\">has alleged<\/a> that stores are using security footage at the register to accuse innocent customers of theft.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a criminal defense attorney, I advise most people to steer clear of self-checkout,\u201d Jernigan says in a video that\u2019s racked up over 2 million views.<\/p>\n<figure using self-checkout.<\/p>\n<p>The first group is those \u201cwith the intent to steal.\u201d Though sophisticated thieves still get away with this, weight sensors and cameras have made stealing more \u201cThese are the people that I genuinely think just forgot to scan an item,\u201d she continued, listing examples such as accidentally leaving something at the bottom of the shopping cart or something. Despite the potentially innocent mishap, these folks do frequently face charges, \u201cbecause \u2026 the big-box stores aren\u2019t going to spend their time and resources trying to figure out if you did it on purpose,\u201d Jernigan said.<\/p>\n<p>The third group is the people she called the \u201ctruly innocent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of these are not getting charged day of,\u201d she explained. Rather, their predicament begins when someone in the asset protection department of a store starts counting inventory, perhaps days, weeks or months, and \u201clater comes up short.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-tiktok wp-block-embed-tiktok\"\/>\n<p>\u201cSo they will begin watching hours of video to see the last person who checked out with the Mario Lego set because they\u2019re two short or an Xbox <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>. And, for some reason, they pinpoint that they think you did it,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p>According to Jernigan, megaretailers like Walmart usually have to present very little evidence to get an affidavit for warrants on the charges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe charges that could land you up to a year in jail,\u201d she cautioned. \u201cYou have to spend thousands of dollars hiring a lawyer and we have to go through grainy video footage to try to determine what all you bought that day.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Jernigan urged people to pay with a card for larger purchases and always keep proof of purchase. <\/p>\n<p>The Post has contacted Walmart for comment on her assessment.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
