Instead of a high-resolution display, sleek lines, and a modern design, you\u2019re met with a wood-encased LED screen that\u2019s more art than tech.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of its design, you\u2019re out of luck if you don\u2019t like the dark walnut wood look. The company isn\u2019t selling the Tidbyt in any other finishes and doesn\u2019t plan to in the foreseeable future, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.awin1.com\/cread.php?awinmid=27942&amp;awinaffid=1023194&amp;clickref=rg&amp;clickref2=120704&amp;ued=https%3A%2F%2Fdiscuss.tidbyt.com%2Ft%2Foptions-of-color-of-frame%2F283%2F2\">according to a forum post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Once powered on, the low-resolution display offers a unique and retro look, but it definitely looks better from afar. I initially had the Tidbyt on my desk, but it was so close that some text was hard to read. I then moved it to a bookcase across the room, which made everything perfectly legible.<\/p>\n<p>You control the Tidbyt using the company\u2019s mobile app (available for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/tidbyt\/id1524348619?at=1010l392g\">iPhone<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.tidbyt.android&amp;hl=en_US&amp;gl=US\">Android<\/a>). Once the smart display is connected to Wi-Fi, the app will open up to the \u201cActivate apps\u201d home screen. Tapping on any of these apps will let you customize its settings or remove it from your Tidbyt.<\/p>\n<p>Jumping into Tidbyt\u2019s settings menu, you have options to change the screen\u2019s brightness, physical location (useful for clock and weather apps), and how often apps are cycled through.<\/p>\n<p>The real magic starts when you click on the \u201c+\u201d icon on the home screen. Doing so opens Tidbyt\u2019s app catalog. Here, you\u2019ll find every app available for your display, broken up into categories. You\u2019ll see apps that display the weather, what\u2019s playing on your Spotify account, news from the New York Times, sports scores, cryptocurrency prices, and so much more.<\/p>\n<p>Tapping on any of the apps will open up a configuration window. Depending on the app, you\u2019ll have to verify your location, sign in to your streaming service, and toggle various viewing options.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019re done setting up the app, tap the \u201cAdd to [Tidbyt name]\u201d button and it\u2019ll be added to your display. All of your installed apps will then cycle through at whatever interval you configured in the setting menu.<\/p>\n<p>The cherry on top is that if you know a bit of Python, you can code your own apps for the Tidbyt using the company\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tidbyt.dev\/\">API<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/tidbyt\/pixlet\">SDK<\/a>. As seen in the above photo, the sign is powered by an included <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/AmazonBasics-USB-Type-C-Charger-Cable\/dp\/B01GGKZ1VA?tag=reviewgeekreviews-20\">6-ft (1.83m) Amazon Basics USB-C to C cable<\/a>\u00a0that pokes directly out of the back of the device.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s possible to buy a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Adapter-Expansion-Suitable-Notebook-Computers\/dp\/B08P5HRH3Z?tag=reviewgeekreviews-20\">90-degree USB-C adaptor<\/a>\u00a0and route the cable downward, but it would still stick out too far. Plus, there\u2019s no easy way to mount the block to your wall without DIYing a solution.<\/p>\n<p>If the company creates a Tidbyt 2.0, I\u2019d love to see a second USB-C port on the bottom of the device. Everyone that saw it in my house, whether it was showing the weather, a custom message, or an animated Nyan Cat graphic, all commented on how cool the digital sign looked.<\/p>\n<p>With the dozens of pre-built apps available, you can make the smart display fit your space and show just about any photo, game score, or stock price that you\u2019d like. You are limited by where you can place the Tidbyt, but it\u2019s easy enough to slot it into an empty section of a bookcase or shelf.<\/p>\n<p>You can <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.awin1.com\/cread.php?awinmid=27942&amp;awinaffid=1023194&amp;clickref=rg&amp;clickref2=120704&amp;ued=https%3A%2F%2Fbuy.tidbyt.com%2Fproducts%2Ftidbyt\">purchase the Tidbyt for $199<\/a>\u00a0directly from the company.
