It\u2019s one of the grubbiest micro-transaction schemes we\u2019ve ever heard of.<\/p>\n<p>As spotted by\u00a0<em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/news\/bmw-is-charging-a-subscription-fee-for-heated-seats-again\">The Drive<\/a><\/em>, BMW launched a variety of paywalled features in the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=204a528a336ede4177fff0d84a044482&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bmw.co.uk%2Fen%2Fshop%2Fls%2Fcp%2Fconnected-drive\">UK<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bmw.at\/de\/shop\/ls\/cp\/connected-drive\">Germany<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bmw.co.nz\/en\/shop\/ls\/cp\/connected-drive\">New Zealand<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bmw.co.za\/en\/shop\/ls\/cp\/connected-drive\">South Africa<\/a>, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=204a528a336ede4177fff0d84a044482&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bmw.co.kr%2Fko%2Fshop%2Fls%2Fcp%2Fconnected-drive\">South Korea<\/a> within the last few months. Some of these sub<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>ion-only features are understandable\u2014like a music service and a \u201cnoise generator\u201d that makes your engine sound like a UFO.<\/p>\n<p>But BMW also\u00a0charges customers for heated seats ($18 a month), adaptive cruise control ($38 a month), and high-beam assist ($12 a month). These features are already built into BMW\u2019s vehicles, and they\u2019ve come standard in high-end vehicles (and some budget cars) for over twenty years.<\/p>\n<p>Customers who want to skip the monthly fee can pay BMW several hundred dollars to unlock these basic features. A lifetime of seat heating (for one vehicle) costs\u00a0$406.<\/p>\n<p>Now, as\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/cars\/2022\/07\/no-bmw-is-not-making-heated-seats-a-subscription-for-us-cars\/\"><em>Ars Technica<\/em><\/a> explains, this process could simplify things for BMW. Customers can pay for a lifetime of seat heating when they purchase their car, or simply enable the feature at a later date. But that\u2019s a stupid excuse\u2014BMW isn\u2019t doing you a favor here; it\u2019s charging extra for something that it <em>already paid to install in the car<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Customers should also be concerned about the long-term functionality of their vehicles. While BMW probably won\u2019t go out of business in our lifetime (companies that are \u201ctoo big to fail\u201d get bailouts, and all that), there\u2019s no guarantee that BMW will continue to support these paywalled features in 10 or 20 years. Will you need to hack your 2022 BMW to get its seat heater working 20 years from now?<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time that BMW has flirted with BS micro-transactions, by the way. The company previously debuted a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/news\/a28580604\/bmw-apple-car-play-cost-explainer\/\">yearly subscription for Apple CarPlay<\/a>, the infotainment software that\u2019s built into its vehicles. (It gave up on the CarPlay subscription for reasons that should be obvious.)<\/p>\n<p>BMW says that it doesn\u2019t plan on bringing these features to the United States. But the prospect of turning cars into endless money-printing machines is too profitable to ignore.
