“#NYPD not considering slashing $1 billion in budget: Ben Tucker<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n A potential $1 billion in cuts to the NYPD\u2019s budget isn\u2019t on the table within the department, First Deputy Commissioner Benjamin Tucker told the City Council\u2019s Committee on Public Safety on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, we\u2019re not,\u201d Tucker said with a laugh when asked by committee chair Donovan Richards (D-Queens) whether the department was on board with the 10-figure cut to its $6 billion budget.<\/p>\n

Members of the Council\u2019s progressive caucus have signaled support for criminal-justice reformers requesting the hefty cut amid protests and renewed scrutiny of policing sparked by death of George Floyd, a black man killed May 25 when a white Minneapolis cop knelt on his neck.<\/p>\n

Mayor Bill de Blasio on Sunday vowed that an unspecified amount of funding would be steered from the NYPD to various youth groups and social<\/a> services, a move endorsed by Commissioner Dermot Shea.<\/p>\n

But Tucker \u2014 the highest-ranking NYPD member at Tuesday\u2019s virtual hearing, with Shea skipping out \u2014 made clear that a $1 billion cut isn\u2019t in play, at least as far as the department is concerned.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what\u2019s been proposed,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re not looking at a billion dollars. That would be seriously harmful to the department and to the city, frankly. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBut there are discussions about what the number would look like, what we\u2019re willing to do, to try to balance that vision \u2026 against the impact that it\u2019ll have on enforcement operations in the city.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Tucker offered no specifics on exactly what cuts he would or would not support, nor did he suggest a figure he\u2019d consider more app<\/a>ropriate.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
