Now, Microsoft\u2019s got me excited again, and, well, skeptical.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week, the tech giant <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.levi.com\/US\/en_US\/jacquard-by-google\/c\/levi_clothing_jacquard_by_google_us\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a filed patent, called \u201cSmart fabric that recognizes objects and touch input.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, Microsoft is developing fabric that can recognize and identify objects nearby.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"So_what_do_you_mean_by_smart_fabric\"><\/span><strong>So what do you mean by smart fabric?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper plugged channel-cta hs-embed-tnw\">\n<div id=\"hs-embed-tnw\" class=\"channel-cta-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"channel-cta-img\"><img class=\"js-lazy\" https:=\"\"\/><\/div>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/src=\" https:=\"\"\/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<div class=\"channel-cta-input\">\n<h2 class=\"channel-cta-title\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Greetings_tech_nerd\"><\/span>Greetings, tech nerd!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"channel-cta-tagline\">Are you into gadgets? Then this weekly <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>letter is for you.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smart fabric refers to textiles that embed <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> such as sensors and conductive thread into the structure and function of the material.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of Microsoft, the patent is for fabric in a jeans\u2019 pocket. The fabric is embedded with layers of connected sensors that can recognize an object or gesture.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, it\u2019s more than just sewing in a few sensors. The patent also details the development of data processing circuitry. It can receive, process, and transmit data from the smart fabric.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, there\u2019s a computing system containing a machine learning module. It receives and processes incoming data and builds prediction models. These can recognize an object placed next to the piece of smart fabric or a touch gesture applied to it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The computer system can recognize objects commonly held in a pocket and their absence. For example, your pocket sends a reminder to your phone when it fails to detect coins for parking meters or your hand sanitizer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for gesture recognition, rubbing the phone against your pocket could quickly trigger a command on your phone via NFC. It could also have applications in gaming and various consumer products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Not_Microsofts_first_rodeo\"><\/span><strong>Not Microsoft\u2019s first rodeo<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microsoft\u2019s been interested in smart fabric and smart clothing since the mid-2010s, filing <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patentlymobile.com\/2015\/09\/microsoft-invents-next-gen-skin-sensors-for-wearables.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">various patents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/winbuzzer.com\/2019\/11\/04\/microsoft-patent-details-foray-into-smart-fabric-technology-xcxwbn\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">electronically functional yarn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for smart shirts and gloves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The current patent is most likely an extension of a 2020 project called <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/publication\/capacitivo-contact-based-object-recognition-on-interactive-fabrics-using-capacitive-sensing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Capacitivo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where a smart fabric tablecloth identifies foods, such as specific items of fruit placed on the table, or even liquid inside glasses. It\u2019s a somewhat strange use case.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" srcdoc=\"&lt;style&gt;*{padding:0;margin:0;overflow:hidden}html,body{background:#000;height:100%}img{position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;object-fit:cover;transition:opacity .1s cubic-bezier(0.4,0,1,1)}a:hover img+img{opacity:1!important}&lt;\/style&gt;&lt;a href=\" https:=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/img.youtube.com\/vi\/ITYGILCULPo\/hqdefault.jpg\" style=\"top: 50%;left:50%;width:68px;height:48px;transform:translate3d(-50%,-50%,0)\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Im_not_holding_my_breath\"><\/span><strong>Why I\u2019m not holding my breath<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no shortage of academically possible projects in smart textiles, including smart bandages that can <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30197225\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">monitor and treat wounds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, shirts capable of lowering your <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchester.ac.uk\/discover\/news\/graphene-smart-textiles-developed-for-heat-adaptive-clothing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">body temperature<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.mit.edu\/2022\/fabric-acoustic-microphone-0316\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fabric that can hear.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> But when it comes to consumer market, there are few examples of real-world applications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The late 2010s saw an interest in smart textiles and wearable tech increase. Processing power got faster and cheaper, and device components got smaller.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the hopes of early predictors of the time that tech-embedded clothing would become a useful, functional component of our wardrobe. It\u2019s possible it may utilize the fabric in accessible product development.
