{"id":47525,"date":"2020-08-16T01:41:00","date_gmt":"2020-08-15T22:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/an-inside-look-at-zimbabwes-all-female-anti-poaching-army\/"},"modified":"2020-08-16T01:41:00","modified_gmt":"2020-08-15T22:41:00","slug":"an-inside-look-at-zimbabwes-all-female-anti-poaching-army","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/an-inside-look-at-zimbabwes-all-female-anti-poaching-army\/","title":{"rendered":"#An inside look at Zimbabwe\u2019s all-female, anti-poaching army"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#An inside look at Zimbabwe\u2019s all-female, anti-poaching army<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-wrapper\" role=\"main\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>        August 15, 2020 <span>|<\/span> 6:41pm           <\/p>\n<div>\n                        Illegal poaching of Africa\u2019s wildlife has skyrocketed during the coronavirus, but one radical, all-female team in Zimbabwe is fighting back.<\/p>\n<p>The Akashinga unit is the focus of a new short documentary on National Geographic produced by Canadian filmmaker and explorer James Cameron.<\/p>\n<p>In \u201cAkashinga: The Brave Ones,\u201d Cameron shows how the quasi-military unit patrols five former trophy hunting reserves, protecting elephants, lions and rhino from hunters, snares and cyanide traps.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the women are survivors of domestic abuse or sexual assault \u2014 and they are finding solace, strength and even a financial future in the group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a woman, I was focused on using Akashinga as a tool to fight my battle for a better life,\u201d Petronella Chigumbura, a divorced mother from Zimbabwe\u2019s Mashonaland West Province, told Elle.com. \u201cI can now feed my kids and pay school fees for them. I acquired a driver\u2019s license (and) I am also building a big house for my children. It was difficult for us to guess what he was thinking about us because he had a very sharp spear and a big knife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And sometimes the arrests strike close to home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI once had to arrest one of my relatives,\u201d Chigumbura said. \u201cI had no option but to arrest them, because it\u2019s my top priority to save wildlife. If we don\u2019t catch [poachers], nothing will be left for the next generation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nyaradzo Auxillia Hoto, who joined Akashinga after escaping an abusive marriage, added: \u201cDuring patrols, it\u2019s very hard to know what the poachers will be thinking, especially when we\u2019re tracking them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the women aren\u2019t just on the lookout for poachers. They\u2019re also watching for wildlife that might be dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne day, we came across a lion just 10 meters [almost 33 feet] away,\u201d Hoto said. \u201cIt was my first time meeting a lion that close.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, both women have come to love and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>reciate the creatures they help save.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnimals were afraid of us when we first started to protect them,\u201d Hoto told the magazine. \u201cThey only thought of being shot\u2026 Now the animals feel secure and we have a strong bond with them.
