title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> advocacy organization <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.glaad.org\/\">GLAAD<\/a> recently published its <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/glaad.org\/smsi\/platform-scores\">2022 Social Media Safety Index<\/a>, which claims that some of the major social media platforms are failing to safeguard users of the community.<\/p>\n<p>GLAAD evaluated the companies using 12 LGBTQ-specific indicators of online safety in regard to privacy, freedom of expression, and explicit protections.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and TikTok, all scored poorly on the group\u2019s scorecard \u2014 <em>less<\/em> than 50% out of 100%.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper channel-cta\">\n<div class=\"ica-text\">\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Algae-made_glass_and_cows_blood\"><\/span>Algae-made glass and cow\u2019s blood?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Experts and artists discuss the future of sustainable material design<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Here are the detailed scores from highest to lowest:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Instagram: 48.38%<\/li>\n<li>Facebook: 46.3%<\/li>\n<li>YouTube: 45.11%<\/li>\n<li>Twitter: 44.7%<\/li>\n<li>TikTok: 42.51%<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Among the most alarming concerns pinpointed by the report is targeted <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deadnaming\">deadnaming<\/a> and misgendering, with Twitter and TikTok being the only platforms offering adequate protection.<\/p>\n<p>YouTube and Twitter users aren\u2019t able to add their prefered pronoun, while Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok either don\u2019t offer the option to all users, or don\u2019t allow users to control who sees their pronoun.<\/p>\n<p>All platforms fail to provide their users with adequate control over how their gender and identity data is collected and shared, both in terms of recommendations and targeted advertising.<\/p>\n<p>To make matters worse, they\u2019ve also scored disturbingly low when it comes to demonetizing or removing LGBTQ legitimate content. The highest score for YouTube was a mere 21.43%, followed by 7.14% for Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, and <em>0% <\/em>for Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, Twitter and YouTube provide zero LGBTQ training to their content moderators.
