\n Gary Sanchez homered for a third straight game<\/a> in Saturday\u2019s 11-5 win over the Red Sox as he tries to put a sluggish start to 2020 behind him.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s tough when you go through a slump,\u2019\u2019 Sanchez said through an interpreter. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to go back to the basics and focus on the simple things and the roots of hitting. Once you get that, things change.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Sanchez, that means working on a high-velocity machine in the cage to make his swing more compact. Aaron Boone is optimistic he\u2019s just about where he needs to be. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s been close for about a week now,\u201d Boone said. \u201cI don\u2019t think he\u2019s all the way where he wants to be yet. He\u2019s recognizing pitches better and getting his good swing off.\u201d <\/p>\n

If the catcher and Gleyber Torres can regain their form, the Yankees should be able to survive some of their recent injuries. <\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, they\u2019re starting to swing at better pitches,\u2019\u2019 hitting coach Marcus Thames said before Saturday\u2019s game. \u201cAnd with Gleyber and Gary, they\u2019re a lot more balanced at the plate and their plans have been good. They\u2019re starting to execute.\u201d<\/p>\n

In this abbreviated season, their early woes have been more pronounced.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always talk to them about not trying to get three hits in one at-bat,\u2019\u2019 Thames said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s gonna come around for the guys because they have a pretty good track record and I think it\u2019s gonna show.\u201d<\/p>\n

It has lately, with Sanchez\u2019s power resurfacing and Torres has reached base in seven straight games.<\/p>\n

Thames credited Torres for an adjustment in his app<\/a>roach and how he was attacking at-bats of late.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe got a little pull-happy at the beginning [of the year] and now he\u2019s getting back to hitting to right-center and center field and not trying to do too much. When he cuts his swing down and tries to be a hitter instead of trying to be a power guy, the power is going to come.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sanchez and Torres have been working to improve defensively, with Sanchez refining his catching style and Torres becoming the starting shortstop.<\/p>\n

Asked whether that work might have led to their struggles at the plate, Thames said sometimes it could, \u201cbut it\u2019s my job to let them know how good they are.\u201d<\/p>\n

At times this season, that\u2019s hardly been evident.<\/p>\n

Thames, though, said he is confident their talent will continue to be on display.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know the batting average doesn\u2019t show it, but if you\u2019re chasing pitches or chasing hits you\u2019re gonna get out of whack,\u2019\u2019 Thames said. \u201cMy job and [assistant hitting coach P.J. Pilittere]\u2019s job: To let them know they\u2019re a really good major league hitter, so let\u2019s stick with the process. \u2026 Take singles when they come and do what the game calls for.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
