You may not know the singer\u2019s name, you may not have had time to learn it, but if you saw <em>Elvis<\/em> you\u2019ll know who we\u2019re talking about. The performer made her big Hollywood debut this year playing <strong>Big Mama Thornton<\/strong> alongside\u00a0<strong>Austin Butler<\/strong>\u2018s acclaimed performance as The King. She even got to share the stage with <strong>Doja Cat<\/strong> at\u00a0<strong>Coachella<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>And her version of <em>Hound Dog<\/em> will live on forever on the biopic\u2019s soundtrack.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Shonka Dukureh - Hound Dog\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Kwzg9jwWtmc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Tragically, Shonka did not have much time to bask in the glory of her late-bloomer movie career. The <strong>Nashville Metropolitan Police Department<\/strong> confirmed to <em>People<\/em> that the gospel singer was found dead in her apartment on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p>According to reports, one of her two young children found her unresponsive and ran to a neighbor\u2019s, who called 911. A cause of death is still being determined, but no foul play is suspected.<\/p>\n<p>Shonka was only 44 years old.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: Austin Butler Explains Why He\u2019s STILL Talking In The Elvis Accent<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> of the Tennessee star\u2019s passing made it all the way to Nashville Mayor <strong>John Cooper<\/strong>, who said in a statement via <em>Fox17<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMy deepest condolences to the family of Shonka Dukureh. Shonka graduated from Fisk and called Nashville home for many years. Her powerful voice and artistry will live on through her music, and we honor her memory on this sad day.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Shonka was just getting started in show business. While she\u2019d done a lot of local theater and sung in church choirs, this was her big break. Before that she\u2019d worked as a teacher and community leader, as she told local outlet <em>WPLN<\/em> just last month:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI taught second grade for a little while over at Buena Vista Elementary in Metro Schools, and then did a lot of work with inner city youth doing after-school programing, summer programing \u2014 those programs that we need during the break so that kids can have a positive place to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Some of her students reached out after her big debut, not believing they were taught by a movie star. She demurred:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThey\u2019re blown away, like, \u2018Wow! Miss Shonka! Really?\u2019 I said, \u2018I\u2019m still Ms. Shonka, you know!&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The performer was so full of life and had so much talent left to show the world. It just doesn\u2019t seem fair. She also spoke to <em>ABC24<\/em> in Memphis about her newfound career earlier this month.
