A creative keyboard maker named HealthyCabinet found a way to unlock up to four new GPIO pins on the Raspberry Pi Pico or Pi Pico W. It requires a bit of soldering work, but nonetheless, it\u2019s a surprisingly simple modification.<\/p>\n<p>Out of the box, both the Raspberry Pi Pico and wireless Pi Pico W\u00a0feature 26 GPIO headers, which line the outsides of the circuit board. But as reported by <em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hackster.io\/news\/this-raspberry-pi-pico-hack-unlocks-two-extra-hidden-gpio-pins-and-potentially-a-couple-more-aee23753281b\">Hackster.io<\/a><\/em>, crafty maker\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/raspberry_pi\/comments\/w37gx2\/i_freed_up_two_gpios_on_the_raspberry_pi_pico\/\">HealthyCabinet discovered<\/a>\u00a0that 26 GPIO pins aren\u2019t enough for some projects\u2014HealthyCabinet needed just one more pin to replace a mechanical keyboard\u2019s MCU with the Pico microcontroller.<\/p>\n<p>After a look at the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/datasheets.raspberrypi.com\/pico\/pico-datasheet.pdf\">Pi Pico datasheet<\/a>, HealthyCabinet noticed that four extra pins are utilized for semi-non-essential internal board functions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>GP1029<\/strong>:\u00a0IP Used in ADC mode (ADC3) to measure VSYS\/3<\/li>\n<li><strong>GPI025<\/strong>:\u00a0OP Connected to user LED<\/li>\n<li><strong>GPI024<\/strong>:\u00a0IP VBUS sense \u2013 high if VBUS is present, else low<\/li>\n<li><strong>GPI023<\/strong>:\u00a0OP Controls the on-board SMPS Power Save pin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Because HealthyCabinet\u2019s project runs on USB power, it doesn\u2019t require\u00a0VBUS sense (GPI024). It also doesn\u2019t need the power indicator LED (GPI025), which is primarily a quality of life feature.<\/p>\n<p>After removing the resistors connected to these pins, HealthyCabinet soldered\u00a026AWG wires in their place for easy GPIO access. Tests with a multimeter and a\u00a0CircuitPython program confirm that these pins are still functional and controlled through software.<\/p>\n<p>HealthyCabinet explains that, if a user needs even more GPIO pins, they can free the SMPS mode switch (GPI023) and VYSY voltage meter (GP1029). But the first modification requires a wire to ground or the 3v3 pin (for power equivalent to board-level voltage), and the former option requires dedicated USB power.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, modifications to the Pi Pico firmware are required to take full advantage of these extra pins.
