Earnings have been a major focus among investors concerned about a slowing U.S. economy, even as the Federal Reserve next week likely fires off another big interest-rate increase to fight class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      The Dow Jones Industrial Average<br \/>\n        DJIA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598065\/realtime\" class=\"negative\">-0.69%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       shed 158 points, or 0.5%, to  31,880. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      The S&amp;P 500<br \/>\n 162.06 points, or 0.5%, to 32,036.90, the S&amp;P 500 gained 1% to 3,998.95 and the Nasdaq rose 1.4% to 12,059.61, marking a third straight session of gains. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Need to Know:<\/strong> Here\u2019s its advice on what to do now.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_driving_markets\"><\/span>What\u2019s driving markets?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Stocks turned lower Friday, after the S&amp;P 500 index briefly broke above 4,000 for the first time since June 9, with shares of technology and communications companies weighing down Wall Street.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSnap is really weighing hard on technologies, and the like,\u201d said Kent Engelke, chief economic strategist at Capitol Securities, by phone. <\/p>\n<p>While earnings expectations have been adjusting to inflation pressures, tighter financial conditions and growing recession fears, \u201cIf you miss expectations, you get crushed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read<\/strong>: It\u2019s the end of \u2018fantasyland\u2019 for Big Tech and its workers<\/p>\n<p>Disappointing results from Snapchat parent Snap Inc. and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> Inc.<br \/>\n        TWTR,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203180645\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.56%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       weighed on the Nasdaq, while the S&amp;P 500\u2019s communications sector slumped 4.5% Friday.<\/p>\n<p>That has earning next week in focus for some of the biggest tech names on Wall Street report, including Microsoft<br \/>\n        MSFT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207732364\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.07%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Meta, Apple<br \/>\n        AAPL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202934861\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.08%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and Amazon<br \/>\n        AMZN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210331248\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.52%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n        along with Boeing<br \/>\n        BA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/208579720\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.96%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       McDonald\u2019s<br \/>\n        MCD,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203508018\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.21%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and Caterpillar<br \/>\n        CAT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203434128\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.52%<\/bg-quote><span>.<\/span>\n        <\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>Economic data also remains in the spotlight as more signs of slowing emerge, particularly with the Federal Reserve widely expected to raise its policy rate another 75 basis points next week as it battles high inflation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>See<\/strong>:  The Fed could get lucky or things might go wrong. A guide to where the economy might go from here<\/p>\n<p>The S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence U.S. Purchasing Managers\u2019 Index on Friday showed the biggest contraction in services and manufacturing activity since the start of the pandemic. This comes as more than two-thirds of the S&amp;P 500 companies who have reported earnings have surpassed Wall Street\u2019s expectations. <\/p>\n<p><strong>See<\/strong>: U.S. July flash PMI data show \u2018worrying deterioration\u2018 in economy<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe preliminary PMI data for July point to a worrying deterioration in the economy,\u201d said Chris Williamson, chief business economist at S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence. \u201cExcluding pandemic lockdown months, output is falling at a rate not seen since 2009.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But from a purely technical perspective, stocks were likely due for a pullback on Friday anyway, said  Kevin Dempter, a technical analyst at Renaissance Macro.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve had a 10% rally off the lows for the S&amp;P, and a 15% for the Nasdaq. You\u2019re getting to overbought levels, and you\u2019re hitting some levels of resistance,\u201d Dempter said. <\/p>\n<p> The 10-year Treasury yield<br \/>\n        TMUBMUSD10Y,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.000%\" channel=\"\" class=\"\">2.781%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       fell 14 basis points to 2.77% from 2.908% in the previous session as investors weigh
