Food &amp; Agriculture Organization (FAO) report on plastics in agriculture, the world\u2019s soil is likely more filled with plastic pollution than the oceans are.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related<\/strong>: U.N. will push ahead with first ever legally-binding treaty to cut plastic waste<\/p>\n<p>The report says that \u201ccommonly used agricultural products, such as non-biodegradable plastic mulching films, greenhouse films and polymer-coated slow-release fertilizers, have a tendency to break down in the soil, leaving behind pieces of plastic ranging in size from large to microscopic. These pieces have unknown, yet potentially detrimental, implications for ecosystems and human health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read<\/strong>: Plastic was found in human blood for the first time. Is this a public health risk?<\/p>\n<p>One of the major milestones is the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.reuters.com%2Fbusiness%2Fsustainable-business%2Fexclusive-un-plastic-treaty-tackle-production-packaging-design-draft-resolution-2022-02-28%2F&amp;data=05%7C01%7C%7C669d5349394646dc056208da655d6e67%7Cd81d1ee699ab4c418bdac4411b2e8885%7C0%7C0%7C637933749379823656%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C2000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=XvkxtXUw83tvKFfwIpC7tnZooESfln9A0NzT6Ru%2BZJg%3D&amp;reserved=0\" class=\"icon none\">U.N. Plastic Treaty Roadmap<\/a>\u00a0drafted earlier this year. The effort, a first of its kind and titled \u201cEnd plastic pollution: Towards an internationally legally binding instrument\u201d is expected to be made final by 2024. It focuses on the full lifecycle of plastic, including production, design and waste. The agreement, if enforced two years from now as legally binding, is expected to be a major blow to oil<br \/>\n        XOM,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/204455864\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.76%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and chemicals<br \/>\n        DOW,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203121064\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.07%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       companies that make plastic and prefer to steer the plastic conversation centered on waste instead of the original packaging contents.<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetPullQuote\n            inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span>Commonly used agricultural products, such as non-biodegradable plastic mulching films, greenhouse films and polymer-coated slow-release fertilizers, have a tendency to break down in the soil, leaving behind pieces of plastic ranging in size from large to microscopic. <span class=\"r-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--right\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>        <small><br \/>\n          <span class=\"inset-author article__inset__pullquote__author\">\u2014  U.N. Food &amp; Agriculture Organization <\/span><br \/>\n        <\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       Plastic is essential to farmers, foresters and fishers from mulching and irrigation to fishing gear and greenhouse films. Polymers\u00a0of various types\u00a0can\u00a0help farmers, foresters and fishers maintain livelihoods, enhance production, reduce crop loss and conserve water, which can all\u00a0aid in food security.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> However,\u00a0in today\u2019s conventional\u00a0farming\u00a0practices,\u00a0it is common to use non-recyclable LDPE plastics (low-density polyethylene or <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/everydayrecycler.com\/plastic-numbers-no-4-ldpe\/#:~:text=Some%20common%20examples%20of%20LDPE,and%20both%20can%20be%20recycled.\" class=\"icon none\">plastic number 4<\/a>) in\u00a0orchards and vineyards. It is\u00a0also\u00a0well known that LDPE can degrade and leach when left in the sunlight for an extended period of time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:<\/strong> Recycling is confusing \u2014 how to be smarter about all that takeout plastic<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>Many farms\u00a0use huge\u00a0amounts of\u00a0LDPE plastic\u00a0as\u00a0rain covering for\u00a0their crops\u00a0which\u00a0ends\u00a0up burned or dumped in landfills after only\u00a0one\u00a0use. The environmental consequences from either final destination are\u00a0clearly\u00a0detrimental to the atmosphere and\u00a0the environment. We are talking about thousands of miles\u00a0of non-recyclable plastic\u00a0under current conventional\u00a0practices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When speaking about land stewardship, which is more responsible: Do we continue to farm under old practices, or embrace new <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> that is environmentally responsible?\u00a0<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetPullQuote\n            inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span> We are producing twice as much plastic waste as we did 20 years ago, with the majority ending up in landfills, burned or leaking into the environment, and only 9% actually recycled. <span class=\"r-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--right\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>        <small><br \/>\n          <span class=\"inset-author article__inset__pullquote__author\">\u2014 OECD<\/span><br \/>\n        <\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       Global brands should be focusing on the highest and best use of plastics in agricultural food production.\u00a0We need\u00a0alternatives, such as long lasting HDPE (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.acmeplastics.com\/hdpe-high-density-polyethylene\" class=\"icon none\">high density polyethylene<\/a>) solutions, for\u00a0example. These help\u00a0move\u00a0farm ground away from microplastic leaching.\u00a0Long-term\u00a0solutions\u00a0using better\u00a0materials\u00a0also cap\u00a0farming\u00a0expenses\u00a0at the\u00a0outset,\u00a0which is attractive to a farmer\u2019s bottom line and ultimately keeps the shelf prices of food\u00a0stable.<\/p>\n<p> According to a recent Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) report, we are producing twice as much plastic waste as we did 20 years ago, with the majority ending up in landfills, burned or leaking into the environment while only 9% is actually recycled. Once candidate for circularity is polyethylene terephthalate\u00a0(<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.petresin.org%2Fnews_introtoPET.asp&amp;data=05%7C01%7C%7C669d5349394646dc056208da655d6e67%7Cd81d1ee699ab4c418bdac4411b2e8885%7C0%7C0%7C637933749379823656%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C2000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=ZbDDFUnG3kN9zFwoZe9p68bJZX032zYmYIL7u%2FnxGp0%3D&amp;reserved=0\" class=\"icon none\">PET<\/a>). It\u2019s a clear, strong and lightweight plastic that is widely used for packaging foods and beverages, especially convenience-sized soft drinks, juices and water. Virtually all single-serving and 2-liter bottles of carbonated soft drinks and water sold in the U.S. are made from PET.<\/p>\n<p> Sustainable ag\u00a0initiatives are critical to\u00a0meeting our food needs without compromising our farmers\u2019 ability to prosper.\u00a0Increasing\u00a0yields\u00a0while reducing negative environmental impacts is now possible using new technologies and optimizing existing resources,\u00a0including sunlight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The global business community has to lead the way in order for countries to finally turn the corner in\u00a0the\u00a0reduction of plastic pollution with technology, innovation, better product design and developing environmentally friendly alternatives\u00a0to conventional materials and practices.
