giant\u2019s biggest move into the healthcare space, but is sparking concerns about data privacy.<\/p>\n<p> On Thursday Amazon<br \/>\n        AMZN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210331248\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.77%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/press.aboutamazon.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/amazon-and-one-medical-sign-agreement-amazon-acquire-one-medical\" class=\"icon none\">announced<\/a> an agreement to acquire One Medical, which operates under 1Life Healthcare Inc.<br \/>\n        ONEM,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205852497\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.58%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       for $18 a share, or $3.9 billion including debt. Amazon wants to reinvent healthcare. In a statement, the company cited the process involved booking medical <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ointments, \u201cwaiting weeks or even months to be seen,\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>s to the pharmacy as areas that could be improved. \u201cWe see lots of opportunity to both improve the quality of the experience\u00a0and give people back valuable time in their days,\u201d said\u00a0Neil Lindsay, senior vice president of\u00a0Amazon Health Services. \u201cWe love inventing to make what should be easy easier and we want to be one of the companies that helps dramatically improve the healthcare experience over the next several years.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       But what about data privacy? As Amazon extends its tentacles further into the healthcare sector, many people have taken to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> to express their concerns about the One Medical deal. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmazon\u2019s latest bundle offering: Prime TV subscriptions + Smart home devices + groceries \u2026. + Your healthcare provider. What could go wrong?\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KristaKBrown\/status\/1550157078609760260\" class=\"icon none\">tweeted<\/a> Krista Brown, senior policy analyst at the American Economic Liberties Project on Thursday. <\/p>\n<p>The American Economic Liberties Project, in a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.economicliberties.us\/press-release\/regulators-must-block-dangerous-amazon-one-medical-acquisition\/\" class=\"icon none\">statement<\/a>, urged regulators to block what it described as Amazon\u2019s \u201cdangerous\u201d acquisition of One Medical. \u201cAllowing Amazon to control the health care data for another 700,000+ individuals is terrifying,\u201d\u00a0Brown said in the statement, also pointing to the deal\u2019s impact on other healthcare companies. \u201cAcquiring\u00a0One Medical will entrench Amazon\u2019s growing presence in the healthcare industry, undermining competition,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n<p> <strong>See Now<\/strong>: How Amazon\u2019s $3.9 billion wager on primary care could change your Prime membership <\/p>\n<p> The project\u2019s data privacy fears were echoed by attorney Elizabeth Shubov, an emerging <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> advisor at the consulting firm Cantellus Group. \u201cAmazon will now have access to data on what we watch, read, eat, buy, ask Alexa, pharmaceuticals, and now primary care. There are some limits on data usage but not enough,\u201d she <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lizshubov\/status\/1550129432177692674\" class=\"icon none\">tweeted<\/a>. \u201cConsumers need to be able to control their data.\u201d <\/p>\n<p> One Medical members also expressed their concerns about the deal. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmazon just bought my healthcare provider. This is terrifying. Paging <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenWarren\" class=\"icon none\">@SenWarren<\/a> please stop this!\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/deb_landau\/status\/1550217301693169671\" class=\"icon none\">tweeted<\/a> Deb Landau. \u201cI don\u2019t want to have to choose between data privacy and quality health care.\u201d <\/p>\n<p> \u201cAmazon is buying OneMedical. As a @onemedical customer, I am worried about data privacy. Are you?\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/denizajohnson\/status\/1550173916391415812\" class=\"icon none\">tweeted<\/a> Deniz Johnson. <\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>Amazon says One Medical customers\u2019 data will not be shared without the customer\u2019s permission.  \u201cAs required by law, Amazon will never share One Medical customers\u2019 personal health information outside of One Medical for advertising or marketing purposes of other Amazon products and services without clear permission from the customer,\u201d said an Amazon spokesperson, in a statement emailed to MarketWatch.  \u201cShould the deal close, One Medical customers\u2019 HIPAA Protected Health Information will be handled separately from all other Amazon businesses, as required by law,\u201d the spokesperson added.<\/p>\n<p> <strong>Opinion<\/strong>:\u00a0\u2018People will freak out\u2019: The cloud boom is coming back to Earth, and that could be scary for tech stocks <\/p>\n<p>Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders slammed the deal in a tweet on Thursday. \u201cThe function of a rational health care system is to provide quality care to all in a cost-effective way, not make billionaires like Jeff Bezos even richer,\u201d he <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenSanders\/status\/1550239412818251778\" class=\"icon none\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cAt a time of growing concentration of ownership, the Justice Department must deny\u00a0Amazon\u2019s acquisition of One Medical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MarketWatch has also reached out One Medical with a request for comment on the data privacy implications of the deal but has not yet heard back from the company.   <\/p>\n<p>The deal\u2019s potential impact on patient care is also attracting attention. Dr. Shantanu Nundy, a primary-care physician and chief medical officer at Accolade Inc., a virtual primary-care provider, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrNundy\/status\/1550468298113839104\" class=\"icon none\">noted<\/a> on Twitter that one-quarter of Americans don\u2019t have a primary-care physician and many more don\u2019t have a trusting relationship with one. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat this deal validates is that there is a real and growing market for new primary-care models that work precisely because they are different in the way patients experience care,\u201d he wrote. \u201cThe trick is for that better experience to also deliver better outcomes.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Nundy said that the Amazon-One Medical model won\u2019t work for all potential patients but adds that no single primary-care model works for everyone. \u201cIs Amazon-One Med \u2018the answer\u2019 for a large subset of patients?\u2014I don\u2019t know yet,\u201d he added. \u201cBut do we need more ways to deliver high quality primary care to more kinds of patients?-YES.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The deal is not Amazon\u2019s first move into healthcare but marks its largest deal in an increasingly busy space. In 2018, Amazon embarked on its acquisition of medication delivery service Pillpack for a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/amazons-pillpack-deal-gives-it-access-to-sensitive-health-data-1530442800\" class=\"icon none\">reported<\/a> $1 billion in cash, beating out Walmart Inc.<br \/>\n        WMT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207374728\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.26%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       in the process. Amazon Pharmacy was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/press.aboutamazon.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/introducing-amazon-pharmacy-prescription-medications-delivered\" class=\"icon none\">launched<\/a> two years later. The Amazon Care telehealth service made its debut in 2019 for employees and was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutamazon.com\/news\/retail\/amazon-care-now-available-nationwide-as-demand-continues-to-grow\" class=\"icon none\">rolled out<\/a> nationwide earlier this year. Amazon also announced that in-person Amazon Care services will be available in more than 20 new cities in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The days when Amazon sold books online are in the distant past and the tech behemoth has gone on to revolutionize entire sectors, from retail to home entertainment. Amazon sees big opportunities in healthcare and undoubtedly possesses the scale and ambition to reshape that space, too. The prospect of lower drug prices, for example, was cited as a positive by consumers in the wake of the Pillpack acquisition.<\/p>\n<p> Amazon shares, which have fallen 26.7% this year, fell 2.1% to $122.13 on Friday.
