Was &#039;Incredibly Therapeutic&#039;&#8221;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<div class=\"image large\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.hiphopdx.com\/2022\/07\/220723-joey-badass-getty-1200x675.jpeg\" alt=\"Joey Bada$$: Creating 'Survivors Guilt' Was 'Incredibly Therapeutic'\" class=\"large\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"news-caption\">\n<span>Paras Griffin\/Getty Images for BET<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"body-copy  js-entry-text\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\nJoey Bada$$ has opened up about the creative process behind \u201cSurvivors Guilt,\u201d one of the more poignant tracks on his new album,\u00a0<em>2000<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Serving as one of the closing\u00a0moments on Joey\u2019s third full-length LP, which arrived on Friday (July 22), the Rahki-produced song is a tribute to Pro Era founding member Capital STEEZ and Joey\u2019s older cousin and tour manager\u00a0Junior B,\u00a0who passed away in 2012 and 2014 respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Over mournful, organ-laced production, the 27-year-old MC opens up about the impact that STEEZ\u2019s death continues to have on him while admitting that he feels partly responsible for his passing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>STEEZY told me get \u2019em so I got em\/ Now my n-gga gone, he will never be forgotten\/ Ever since he left I\u2019ve just been struggling without him<\/em>,\u201d Joey raps before adding, \u201c<em>Then I caught a little wave and headed back to shore\/And that\u2019s when he started drowning\/And he had no one around him, so partially I feel it\u2019s my fault.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paying tribute to his cousin in the song\u2019s second verse, Joey raps:\u00a0\u201c<em>Yeah, and R.I.P. my cousin Junior B\/\u00a0Y\u2019all ain\u2019t know too much about him, so it\u2019s up to me\/\u00a0To share his legacy with the world\/\u00a0It kills me to think he\u2019ll never meet my baby girl\/\u00a0And when I lost Jun\u2019, that hurt me in the worst way\/\u00a0He even died two days before his birthday\/\u00a0Damn, that brings tears to my eyes\/\u00a0My n-gga really never made it up to twenty-five.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Zane Lowe on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/music.apple.com\/gb\/curator\/new-music-daily-radio-with-zane-lowe\/1458161472\">Apple Music 1\u2019s <em>New Music Daily<\/em> show<\/a>, the Brooklyn r<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>er said penning the track helped him overcome years of personal torment following the deaths of STEEZ and Junior B.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was incredibly therapeutic,\u201d he explained. \u201cEven just the way that it started. I just started writing the song. I was in the shower one day, and a rhyme scheme had came to me. It was something along the lines of rich and rotten. And I started to dive deep into that whole idea of how my life is, where it\u2019s at now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the time when I made the song, I had realized that I\u2019ve been affected by this thing called survivor\u2019s guilt. And it hit so close to home because when I first came out, I was trying to bring everybody along with me. Just the way it had me feeling and moving for a lot of years, without realizing that\u2019s what was affecting me. Me feeling like, all right, if my homies can\u2019t come with me, then I can\u2019t go\u2026 it was incredibly therapeutic for me to even come to that point of self-awareness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen on another level, to be able to put that into words where I could release them. Because just making the song alone was enough for me. But now sharing it with the world and having it hit close to home for people, or people saying that it\u2019s relatable to things that they\u2019ve been through, that\u2019s the ultimate reward.\u201d\u00a0Check out Joey Bada$$\u2019s interview with Zane Lowe above.<\/p>\n<p>Capital STEEZ (real name Courtney Dewar Jr.) reportedly jumped from the roof of the Cinematic Music Group headquarters in Manhattan, New York.
