Chuck Schumer was expected to hold a vote for an antitrust bill designed to rein in Big Tech \u2014 and its top Republican backer is slamming the gentleman from New York for dragging his feet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s past time that the Majority Leader bring up our bipartisan antitrust bill cracking down on Big Tech\u2019s anticompetitive behavior,\u201d Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) told The Post. \u201cWe need a date certain for a vote, and I call on Sen. Schumer to name one \u2014 if not before August recess, then this fall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The renewed heat comes as the Senate gears up for its final two legislative weeks before an August recess, after which many members will be consumed with midterm campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Senate has spent weeks on either purely partisan legislating or inconsequential nominees,\u201d Grassley griped.<\/p>\n<p>Grassley wants Schumer to hold votes for a bill that he\u2019s pushing alongside Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) that supporters say would reduce the power of tech giants like Amazon and Meta to stifle market competition. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.).<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While Schumer has bided his time, Amazon, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le, Meta and Google combined have spent more than $35 million in just the first half of this year on lobbying efforts, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-07-21\/amazon-breaks-lobbying-record-amid-antitrust-fight\">Bloomberg reported<\/a> on Thursday. The companies have also flooded Beltway airwaves with commercials opposing antitrust bills and bought up ad space in influential <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>letters like Politico Playbook.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSen. Klobuchar and I have worked meticulously to prepare our legislation for a floor vote,\u201d Grassley said. \u201cAll the while, armies of lobbyists for the tech giants continue to mislead about our bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Internet Innovation and Choice Act \u2014 or so-called \u201cnon-discrimination bill\u201d \u2014 would stop platforms from \u201cself-preferencing\u201d their content. For instance, Amazon would no longer be able to promote its own goods over third-party sellers on its e-commerce platform.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While Schumer has called a vote on a bill funding chipmakers and pushed to legalize marijuana, he\u2019s demurred on the antitrust bill. Grassley is pushing Schumer to hold a vote on antitrust legislation.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Klobuchar and Grassley both repeatedly promised that they have the necessary votes for the bill \u2014 but when the Washington Post earlier this month\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/07\/12\/fate-lawmakers-tech-antitrust-push-is-up-air\/\">asked all 100 senators\u2019 offices<\/a>\u00a0how they would vote, the vast majority did not give a yes or no answer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the telling of one senior GOP Senate aide, that leaves Grassley and Klobuchar with a \u201cchicken and egg\u201d problem.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the aide who asked not to be named, 60 senators aren\u2019t going to publicly come out in support of the bill right now, especially if they know the legislation isn\u2019t a priority for either party\u2019s leadership. But if Schumer brings it up for a vote, many senators will bow to the pressure and vote for it, the aide predicted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKlobuchar needs commitments to bring to Schumer, but no one wants to go on record until they have to,\u201d the aide said. \u201cPlenty of members seem happy to keep sitting on the fence, regardless of how they might ultimately vote.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Insiders say that several Democrats, including California Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Alex Padilla, would likely vote against the legislation. Both groups have taken money from Big Tech companies that would be impacted by the bill.<\/p>\n<p>In July, Americans for Tax Reform urged GOP lawmakers to sign onto a draft letter opposing the bill addressed to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The previously unreported letter claimed that the bill would \u201cgrow the size and scope of government, worsen conservative censorship, and increase inflationary pressure on American families\u201d and force tech companies into a \u201c\u2018mother-may-I\u2019 relationship with the federal government.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On the Democratic party\u2019s left flank, meanwhile, more than a dozen members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus sent a letter to Schumer on Friday, writing that two antitrust bills including the Grassley-Klobuchar bill \u201care ready for a vote and we urge you to schedule the vote on them in the next few weeks.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/grassley-schumer-tech-06.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"sen schumer\" class=\"wp-image-23168414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/grassley-schumer-tech-06.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/grassley-schumer-tech-06.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/grassley-schumer-tech-06.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Sen. Schumer has yet to introduce antitrust legislation on the floor.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And a separate coalition of progressive non-profits including Fight for the Future and the American Economic Liberties Project sent another letter to the Majority Leader on Friday, arguing that he should recuse himself from decisions around the vote because\u00a0two of his daughters work for Meta and Amazon.\u00a0News of his daughters\u2019 jobs was first reported by The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSenator Schumer supports this bill and is working with Senator Klobuchar to get the votes,\u201d Angelo Roefaro, a spokesman for Schumer told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Yet even if the bills make it past the Senate, their companion bills would also have to make it past the House \u2014 which some insiders say could present an even bigger hurdle.<\/p>\n<p>While Schumer has said he supports both of the Klobuchar-Grassley bills, House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has not done so, instead saying more <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly that she supports tech regulation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pelosi has come under scrutiny for profiting from these tech companies, as her husband Paul has made millions actively trading stocks of companies like Google.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Pelosi did not respond to request for comment.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
