{"id":47751,"date":"2020-08-16T21:44:00","date_gmt":"2020-08-16T18:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/facebooks-algorithm-promotes-content-denying-holocaust-study-says\/"},"modified":"2020-08-16T21:44:00","modified_gmt":"2020-08-16T18:44:00","slug":"facebooks-algorithm-promotes-content-denying-holocaust-study-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/facebooks-algorithm-promotes-content-denying-holocaust-study-says\/","title":{"rendered":"#Facebook\u2019s algorithm \u2018promotes\u2019 content denying Holocaust, study says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a>\u2019s algorithm \u2018promotes\u2019 content denying Holocaust, study says<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-wrapper\" role=\"main\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>        August 16, 2020 <span>|<\/span> 2:44pm           <\/p>\n<div>\n                        Facebook is rife with Holocaust-denial content, and its algorithm \u201cactively promotes\u201d the material, according to a new analysis.<\/p>\n<p>The UK-based Institute for Strategic Dialogue, an anti-extremist organization, scoured the social-media site and discovered at least 36 groups with a combined 366,068 followers hosting content denying the Nazi genocide, The Guardian reported Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Upon following a group with such content, Facebook recommended others of a similar ilk, the study found.<\/p>\n<p>The ISD also found that searching for \u201cHolocaust\u201d on Facebook returned suggestions for groups denying the atrocity, which in turn linked to publishers peddling revisionist history literature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFacebook\u2019s decision to allow Holocaust denial content to remain on its platform is framed under the guise of protecting legitimate historical debate, but this misses the reason why people engage in Holocaust denial in the first place,\u201d Jacob Davey, ISD\u2019s senior research manager, told The Guardian.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDenial of the Holocaust is a deliberate tool used to delegitimize the suffering of the Jewish people and perpetuate long-standing antisemitic tropes, and when people explicitly do this it should be seen as an act of hatred,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook and other social-media sites have been increasingly scrutinized for their policies over misinformation spread on their platforms.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been particularly outspoken on his reservations about policing content, saying that social-media sites should not \u201cbe arbiters of truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, the site for the first time deleted a post by President Trump over misinformation, striking down a video clip in which Trump said children are \u201calmost immune from COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Facebook said in a statement to The Guardian that it takes seriously content making light of the Holocaust <span>\u2014 but that material simply denying its occurrence doesn\u2019t necessarily warrant removal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe take down any post that celebrates, defends, or attempts to justify the Holocaust.
