There\u2019s almost always an \u201cEnergy Saver\u201d or \u201cPower Saving\u201d mode that tends to look the worst. How much energy does this mode actually save? Is it worth using?<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Is_Energy_Saving_Mode\"><\/span>What Is Energy Saving Mode?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Picture modes on your TV are presets for different brightness, contrast, and saturation levels. You can usually adjust these things separately, but the modes do it all for you.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnergy Saving\u201d mode is simply designed to optimize these settings for saving power. The most obvious way it does this is by dimming the screen. Energy Saving mode will typically be the dimmest of all the modes available on your TV.<\/p>\n<p>Simply put, whether it\u2019s called \u201cEnergy Saver,\u201d \u201cPower Saving,\u201d or \u201cEco Mode,\u201d these picture modes imply your TV will use less energy. Using a smart plug that can measure wattage, I recorded the energy usage from three different TVs at all of their available picture modes. First of all, Energy Saving modes across the board are using less energy than the standard settings. The \u201cVivid\u201d modes also don\u2019t seem to use much more power than the standard settings\u2014meaning it\u2019s adjusting color more than brightness.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the TVs have a \u201cTheater\u201d mode that had a similar effect on power usage as the Energy Saving modes. In fact, the bigger 4K TV uses the least amount of power in this mode. That\u2019s because theater modes typically dim the display for dark rooms.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the differences between Energy Saving modes and other modes are not as pronounced. The smaller 1080p TVs don\u2019t have major differences between Energy Saving and the higher power usage modes. First of all, Energy Saving mode is clearly doing <em>something<\/em>. That may not be super surprising\u2014of course a dimmer display requires less energy. Still, it is nice to know \u201cEnergy Saving Mode\u201d is not an empty marketing term.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say your electricity rate is $0.18 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) and you have a 4K TV similar to the one in the chart above. Watching TV for four hours a day with Energy Saving mode would cost around $1.90 per month\/$23 per year. At the highest energy usage mode, you\u2019re looking at around $2.50 per month\/$30 per year.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re essentially saving $7 a year for a slightly worse picture on your TV. Are the energy and money savings enough to make that worth it? That\u2019s entirely up to you. If you have a very large, ultra-high-definition TV, maybe it makes a big enough difference. However, if you have that TV, you probably want it to look the best it can.<\/p>\n<p>Energy Saving mode could be a good \u201cevery day\u201d mode to use while you switch back to \u201cStandard\u201d or \u201cVivid\u201d mode for <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a> or other things you want to really shine.
