At the time, Liam explained that he had previously auditioned for\u00a0<strong>Simon Cowell<\/strong> when he was just 14 years old, back in 2008. Cowell told him he wasn\u2019t ready at the time, and to go back to school for a little while. When Liam came back two years later, Simon apparently realized it had all come together.<\/p>\n<p>Liam recalled on the\u00a0<em>Impaulsive<\/em> podcast:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFrom what I\u2019ve heard, part of the reason One Direction was made was because of Simon\u2019s promise to me that, \u2018In two years, I\u2019ll make this work for you.\u2019 So he started with my face, and then worked around the rest. \u2026 I was the honorary member of One Direction. He told me that story himself at his house.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Those comments went viral immediately after they aired, and Liam got roasted online. Even\u00a0<strong>Lizzo<\/strong> weighed in, calling Payne a \u201cpoor boy\u201d who was \u201clied to\u201d about being 1D\u2019s frontman! (Um, hello\u00a0<strong>Harry Styles<\/strong>?!?!)<\/p>\n<p>Well, this past weekend,\u00a0<i>X Factor UK<\/i> decided to step in. The show shared four minutes of never-before seen footage of the band being formed over on YouTube on Saturday in honor of the 12-year anniversary of the group\u2019s inception.<\/p>\n<p>In the clip, the judges \u2014 Cowell,\u00a0<strong>Nicole Scherzinger<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Louis Walsh<\/strong> \u2014 can be seen sifting through headshots before Nicole pushes a pic of\u00a0<strong>Niall Horan<\/strong> to the top of the table. Styles\u2019 photo comes up next, with Nicole adding a quick comment:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOh, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Louis Tomlinson<\/strong>\u2018s pic then pops up and is chosen, with Walsh sizing up the trio this time:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThey look good together.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Seems simple! One, two, three, and they\u2019re rolling!<\/p>\n<p>Nicole starts to get really excited about the group\u2019s potential, too:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe little girls are going to love them. They\u2019re just too talented to get rid of. And they\u2019ve got just the right look and the right charisma on stage.\u00a0They\u2019re, like, little stars. You can\u2019t get rid of little stars, so you put them all together.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>At that point, the three judges have a bit of a disagreement as Payne\u2019s photo comes up. (Fourth!!!)<\/p>\n<p>Cowell motions to Liam\u2019s photo as well as a separate pile of options, and says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cHe [Liam] was the standout audition. You don\u2019t think he should be over there?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Scherzinger replies optimistically about Payne:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIf he\u2019s the standout, then he could be the leader [of the other three]. I think he would definitely shine.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Cowell isn\u2019t quite convinced, and he warns his fellow judges:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cHe [Liam] thinks he\u2019s better than anyone else in that list.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Walsh agrees with that assessment, adding on to Cowell\u2019s warning:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNo, he does, Simon. He has the confidence.
