Revolutionary communication technologies like Facebook are free to use. These miracles should satiate our ancient need for community, right?<\/p>\n<p>Not quite. Paradoxically,<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/streaklinks.com\/BIyV6F929tTw_WDx1wRlrIFD\/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnbc.com%2F2020%2F01%2F23%2Floneliness-is-rising-younger-workers-and-social-media-users-feel-it-most.html\"> loneliness is on the rise.<\/a> There are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">many<\/span> factors at play, but our increasingly virtual living has a lot to do with it. After two years of lockdowns and social distancing, it\u2019s easy to equate remote work with lonely, restricted homeworking.<\/p>\n<p>If true \u2014 that the loneliness epidemic is set to spiral \u2014 it\u2019s hard to overstate how damaging this would be.<\/p>\n<p>Loneliness can be fatal. According to the<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/streaklinks.com\/BIyV6GGlJevRXaiWhQ4nqp0a\/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.campaigntoendloneliness.org%2Fthe-facts-on-loneliness%2F\"> Campaign to End Loneliness<\/a> website, it\u2019s associated with an increased risk of developing coronary heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure. It even puts individuals at greater risk of cognitive decline and dementia.<\/p>\n<p>So should we put the brakes on the remote work revolution? Do we all need to return to the office as quickly as possible?<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Its_time_to_stop_debating_and_start_solving\"><\/span><strong>It\u2019s time to stop debating and start solving <\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We weren\u2019t convinced.<\/p>\n<p>Having spent years immersed in the remote work movement \u2014 one building the world\u2019s largest<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/streaklinks.com\/BIyV6F9pKT89chot0gwXFzsM\/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.selina.com%2F\"> hospitality platform<\/a> for digital nomads, the other running a global<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/streaklinks.com\/BIyV6Hjo6H2LoPngFAtsSmz0\/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.workanywhere.org%2F\"> workers\u2019 rights campaign<\/a> \u2014 we wondered if consciously designed remote work might actually present a solution.<\/p>\n<p>To get to the bottom of this, we enlisted the help of leading experts from Boston University to survey more than 1,000 remote workers from 55 countries.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how \u2018Social Connection in Remote Work\u2019 (SCRW) came to be. It\u2019s a<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/streaklinks.com\/BIyV6Gqz88WZh2Jz8QrxcsdE\/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.workanywhere.org%2Fsocial-connection-in-remote-work\"> first-of-its-kind study<\/a> exploring loneliness in remote work environments.<\/p>\n<p>We hope the findings will help evolve the \u2018remote vs. in-office\u2019 debate. The world is never going back to the way it was before. Therefore, we\u2019re focusing on making flexible working a positive experience for everybody.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Heres_an_overview_of_what_we_found\"><\/span><strong>Here\u2019s an overview of what we found <\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>1. Any disruption of this scale will present serious risks and challenges \u2014 which is why we need to understand how our social and mental health is being impacted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. In addition to the problems mentioned above, loneliness has also been associated with damaged relationships, depression, substance abuse, sedentary behaviour and many other health risks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. It\u2019s a subjective feeling and refers to an individual\u2019s perceived quality of their personal relationships. If social connections during the workday were unimportant to most people, how and where they work would not be relevant to the question of loneliness. But that\u2019s not the case.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. It\u2019s estimated that large U.S. businesses<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/streaklinks.com\/BIyV6GSXl9FChDxndwiHkaPo\/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gallup.com%2Fworkplace%2F247391%2Ffixable-problem-costs-businesses-trillion.aspx\"> lose at least $1 trillion each year<\/a> due to voluntary employee turnover, which many workers say their managers or organizations could have prevented.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. The \u2018least lonely\u2019 people still spend most of their working day there. But our data <em>does<\/em> show a link between working-from-home and loneliness. Homeworkers in our study also reported home as their most socially fulfilling work location <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">significantly less<\/span> than those who work primarily from offices or third spaces.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. What\u2019s striking about this finding is that over 30% of our sample population never worked from third spaces over an average month. If all of our respondents had tried third spaces, the 42% figure would likely be even higher.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. This suggests that coworking spaces, the most socially fulfilling of all third spaces, offer a tangible proposition for combating loneliness in remote work environments.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_now\"><\/span><strong>What now?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Our study found that remote work can be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">less<\/span> lonely than office-based work.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because coworking spaces were shown to be more socially fulfilling than offices for many workers. This also indicates that returning to the office might be<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/streaklinks.com\/BIyV6GmqqjIJylPC2QE_WShY\/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.charterworks.com%2Fwhy-many-workers-will-be-lonely-even-when-they-return-to-the-office%2F\"> harmful<\/a> for some.<\/p>\n<p>So what can governments, employers, and even coworking providers do to help?<\/p>\n<p>Selina have spent years implementing programs that foster social connection between guests and locals. They\u2019ve watched hundreds of locations become \u2018community hubs\u2019 for digital nomads who crave a sense of belonging on the road. As a coworking and coliving destination and global platform, building a strong community is not an option, it\u2019s a must.<\/p>\n<p>Now that the coworking phenomenon is a steadfast component of work culture, Selina urges providers to recognise and understand the big picture and their part in reviving local communities. Building a community with people is how the industry can land a blow on the loneliness epidemic.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, #WorkAnywhere believes governments should fund the creation of community workspaces in underprivileged communities. A world where only the affluent can access loneliness-tackling coworking hubs is one where we have magnified existing inequalities.<\/p>\n<p>Businesses can help too by supporting their remote employees with memberships. We\u2019ve seen how loneliness correlates with the costly issue of employee turnover, therefore, organizations that want to retain their workers would do well to make coworking spaces more accessible.<\/p>\n<p>With public and private-sector stakeholders moving in the same direction, we\u2019ll find a mutually reinforcing system that improves the workplace experience for millions of people.<\/p>\n<p>The workforce has changed forever.
