Earth-orbiting space lab and a major comestics brand. But what draws the Center for the Advancement of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a> in Space, manager of the International Space Station National Lab, and Est\u00e9e Lauder together is a necessity to tackle plastic waste.<\/p>\n<p> The ISS National Lab on Thursday announced winners for its Sustainability Challenge: Beyond Plastics, t<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ing the leading ideas for leveraging the waste and sustainability data that its orbiting laboratory collects into action to reduce plastics in landfills and the world\u2019s waterways. Winners can also count on the lab to test their ideas.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       The contest builds on an ISS workshop\u2019s recommendations to address the plastics dilemma through the design and production of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/omicoplastics.com\/blog\/plastics-polymers-difference\/\" class=\"icon none\">sustainable polymers<\/a> aided by access to space.<\/p>\n<p>Est\u00e9e Lauder, whose beauty lines and packaging rely on the safety, hygiene and cost-effectiveness of plastic, but who has also declared waste cleanup and smarter plastic use as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.elcompanies.com\/en\/our-commitments\" class=\"icon none\">primary sustainability goals<\/a>, will help fund the projects. <\/p>\n<p>Est\u00e9e Lauder<br \/>\n        EL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200740220\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+2.99%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       is aiming to have 75%-100% of its packaging be recyclable, refillable, reusable, recycled or recoverable as soon as 2025. It can already say that 70% of its packaging meets these goals.<\/p>\n<p>Broadly speaking, the bottles, tubes and containers used annually by the cosmetic industry adds up to\u00a0120 billion units of plastics packaging. And of that plastic, about\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/facts-and-figures-about-materials-waste-and-recycling\/containers-and-packaging-product-specific-data\" class=\"icon none\">70% ends up in landfills<\/a>, according to data from 2020.\u00a0In all, only about 9% of the world\u2019s plastic is successfully recycled, according to a report from the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development. It\u2019s the CO2-producing combustion of oil<br \/>\n        CL00,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209723049\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+1.24%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and other fossil fuels that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/ghgemissions\/sources-greenhouse-gas-emissions#:~:text=Combustion%20of%20natural%20gas%20and,and%20commercial%20sectors%20in%202020.\" class=\"icon none\">is primarily driving global warming<\/a>. But the project\u2019s feature is two-fold. Ultimately, captured carbon dioxide could be used as a resource to replace oil as the leading polymer feedstock to produce plastics.<\/p>\n<p>The second highlighted project is focused on the biological recycling of plastic waste. Led by Dr. Katrina Knauer of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the BOTTLE Consortium, this project aims to determine whether space radiation and microgravity influence the behavior of specific bacteria strains that break down plastics and produce polymer building blocks. <\/p>\n<p>This is especially important because the process may be used in mixed plastic recycling consisting of many types of plastics.
