They told me that the brand is collaborating closely with the local authorities to set up a course adapted to cities and responsive to the most common rider behavior problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the problem is that the course isn\u2019t a legal obligation. \u201cWe are looking at how we can best incentivize users to attend, with Dott credit or free rides, for example,\u201d said Haycocks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think this gets to the crux of the issue. How do micromobility operators prevent, reduce, and respond to bad riding?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_battle_to_stop_riders_acting_like_fuckwits\"><\/span><strong>The battle to stop riders acting like fuckwits<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the last five years, every operator has rolled out tech to curb and penalize bad riding.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" srcdoc=\"&lt;style&gt;*{padding:0;margin:0;overflow:hidden}html,body{background:#000;height:100%}img{position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;object-fit:cover;transition:opacity .1s cubic-bezier(0.4,0,1,1)}a:hover img+img{opacity:1!important}&lt;\/style&gt;&lt;a href=\" https:=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/img.youtube.com\/vi\/PQfGdXXoL9Y\/hqdefault.jpg\" style=\"top: 50%;left:50%;width:68px;height:48px;transform:translate3d(-50%,-50%,0)\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, Voi launched <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/link.mediaoutreach.meltwater.com\/ls\/click?upn=SMJBYjsIOayflP33mzQw8WZqrgnDlPC9U0Nvv0yOvPNPgfnmPP5KpVhBQ4kk5dkDUFd2_QriuayjSVSZuIoSv3cP2uk8L6dMRwmEoA9-2FPahlUza5CVol-2FAAqzUnRbx4O-2FmnaJJctS39WSV1XN4pwAobh8BZnz4-2B3tMWuQ8M7RhTUZ6TxJmwKXTgra184cA4SejU6-2FDA239mZzma-2BZGmcPNLXMrwSYn-2BgmOaOseIoVQuleKJTyBPsHW-2BB8wvabsmxZ5aDomgvj223ltw1jVXZ8kL0l-2BiccA4YrwlZ6G2MkqPC2GU40z7Mu6y0EMPt-2FUETy4gUw3G5qh9O2-2Fx69hDb-2F-2BtITFQoDuJJ0ytj6q60r4zuuBf0nIBNQEQdRUH1bZpRvTdIgNYJK6syQhN-2B71-2BbIbQkFCztoHEdnEsx4E4SMXFbFIU78QAXFxdAVlDlH9rcKbHAEvFl0RAci-2FjBaG4M13GYlzVmlrdpRbV9EEGS767HutF4-3D\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RideLikeVoila<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 a digital traffic school for e-scooters \u2014 and introduced an \u2018<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">end of ride photo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018 requiring riders to provide visual proof of correct parking or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk a \u00a325 (US$35) fine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>Neuron Mobility has the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scootsafe.com\/\">Scootsafe Academy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/new-home.superpedestrian.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Superpedestrian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.li.me\/electric-scooter\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lime<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> use AI to detect sidewalk riding and other bad behavior, alerting riders audibly and slowing the escooter. Lime is also rolling out a late-night rider test for alcohol. It tests riders on their reaction times before they can unlock an escooter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, when we talk about bad riding, there are no statistics on the number of private escooters on the streets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most instances (besides the UK), they\u2019ve been hugely absent from the bad rider narrative. And Italy got people buying their own escooters, launching <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20200514\/italy-offers-city-dwellers-up-to-500-to-buy-a-new-bike\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a subsidy scheme<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2020 that allowed residents to claim back up to \u20ac500 ($500) of the purchase price.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_polices_private_riders\"><\/span><strong>Who polices private riders?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While micromobility operators are doing the heavy lifting, curbing private owners relies on police being vigilant and motivated enough to fine people for speeding or riding on the sidewalk. Besides those initiatives, cities such as Berlin and Stuttgart are rolling out <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.voiscooters.com\/blog\/voi-parking-stations-in-berlin\/\">parking zones<\/a>, offering micromobility customers free ride minutes for using them. But this offers no incentive for private riders to use a parking zone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Collaboration_is_crucial\"><\/span><strong>Collaboration is crucial\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Micromobility operators spend an inordinate amount of time collaborating with local municipalities to manage the flow of escooters in their cities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But almost every city has multiple vendors. Successful behavioural controls must extend across all fleets. Otherwise, people fined in one <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a> will simply jump on the escooter of a competing brand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_are_bad_riders\"><\/span><strong>Who are bad riders?\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anecdotally, ask most members of the public who the bad riders are, they\u2019ll most likely choose adolescent males. However, no micromobility provider has publicly shared the demographics of bad offenders. And we have no demographic data on private owners.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although nighttime speed controls and cognitive tests point to the problem of drunk riders speeding at night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But are people riding escooters after a night of drinking because there\u2019s inadequate public transport after dark? It\u2019s hard to say, despite the narrative around scooters and their critical role in last mile mobility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, some riders choose sidewalk riding because they feel unsafe on streets next to cars, highlighted by focus groups of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women who ride escooters<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women also cited the danger of riding into slow zones with unexpected deceleration. Some felt unsafe riding at night due to the slow pace, or needing to walk a heavy scooter in areas where they no longer function at night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that not all controls affect all riders equally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Micromobility providers are united in trying a combination of carrot and stick approaches to managing rider behaviour.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But ultimately, we\u2019ll only get riders and wayward escooters off the sidewalk through the provision of quality protected bike lanes and accessible parking spaces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And as for the fuckwits who willfully ride badly for the fun of it?
