But there\u2019s a dirty secret \u2014 what h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ens to turbines at the end of their life?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week, a <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1364032122004385\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the University of South Australia\u2019s Future Industries Institute revealed the huge waste legacy of discarded wind turbines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the problem is only getting worse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper shift channel-cta hs-embed-tnw\">\n<div id=\"hs-embed-tnw\" class=\"channel-cta-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"channel-cta-img\"><img class=\"js-lazy\" https:=\"\"\/><\/div>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/src=\" https:=\"\"\/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<div class=\"channel-cta-input\">\n<h2 class=\"channel-cta-title\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hi_there_EV_nerd\"><\/span>Hi there, EV nerd!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"channel-cta-tagline\">Subscribe now for a weekly recap of our favorite mobility stories<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And as more countries transition from gas to wind energy, the problem will only intensify. For example, the German government aims to build between <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zeit.de\/news\/2021-12\/29\/habeck-deutschland-koennte-klimaziele-bis-2023-verfehlen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1,000 and 1,500<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> new wind turbines annually.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lifecycle of a wind turbine is around 20-25 years. The problem is the material in the blades. They are made from <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5706232\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glass fiber\/epoxy matrix composites<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to withstand all weather. Both materials are hard to break down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traditionally, the industry has dealt with leftover wind turbines by depositing them in landfill or incineration in cement factories \u2014 and burning fiberglass isn\u2019t great for the environment either!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But as the sector looks to clean up its act, enterprising businesses are finding ways to create a circular, zero-waste solution that bypasses landmass and reduces the industry\u2019s carbon footprint.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Greener_cement\"><\/span><strong>Green(er) cement\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since 2020, Veolia <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.veolianorthamerica.com\/media\/press-releases\/ge-renewable-energy-announces-us-blade-recycling-contract-veolia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">turns GE Renewable Energy\u2018s wind turbine blades into raw material<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for use in cement manufacturing, replacing the coal, sand, and clay needed to make cement. This results in a 27% reduction in CO2 emissions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fiber\"><\/span><strong>Fiber<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the US, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfiberglassinc.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global Financial Solutions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> turns blades into manufacturing-grade fibers, pellets, construction materials, panels, and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Laminates\"><\/span><strong>Laminates\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Poland, recycling firm <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anmet.com.pl\/?lang=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anmet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dismantles wind turbines. It develops <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> to One example is the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.masterresource.org\/wind-power-health-effects\/wind-turbine-noise\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">noise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they produce when placed in residential areas. They also kill birds. Wind farms in Germany, on average, dispense of <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nabu.de\/tiere-und-pflanzen\/voegel\/gefaehrdungen\/24661.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than 100,000 avians a year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (However, glass-covered buildings kill about 108 million birds annually, and 70 million die from collisions with moving transport. So it could be worse).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/harmvandenbrink.medium.com\/hacking-wind-turbines-explained-230997db62f6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cybersecurity challenges<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are endemic.\u00a0 Some turbines still run on Windows 2000 \u2014 yes, you read that correctly. And, security updates in Windows 2000 ended in 2010.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Current efforts to bring life to discarded wind turbines exist. But they don\u2019t really represent a definitive commitment to circular design and critical end-of-life planning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prof Majewski says the small market for reclaimed materials means that the cost of manufacturing needs to factor in the price of recycling the blades:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEither the manufacturer takes responsibility for what needs to be done with the blades at the end of their useful life, or the wind farm operators must provide end-of-life solutions as part of the planning approval process for their business operations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So the industry must take responsibility for this one \u2014 they\u2019ve had long enough to develop a solution!
