While answering fan questions about the Oscars slap and his actions following the incident, Smith says, \u201cThere is no part of me that thinks that was the right way to behave in that moment.\u201d The shamed actor also takes ownership for his actions, revealing that wife Jada Pinkett Smith\u2018s did not ask him to defend her in that moment.<\/p>\n<p>The very first question in the 5-minute video was \u201cWhy didn\u2019t you apologize to Chris in your acceptance speech?\u201d Smith\u2019s response: \u201cI was fogged out by that point. It\u2019s all fuzzy. I\u2019ve reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he\u2019s not ready to talk. And when he is, he will reach out. So I will say to you, Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior was unacceptable, and I\u2019m here whenever you\u2019re ready to talk.\u201d Then comes an apology to Rock\u2019s mother and brother.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m\">\u201cThat was one of the things about that moment. I just didn\u2019t realize,\u201d Smith explains. \u201cI wasn\u2019t thinking about how many people got hurt in that moment. So I want to apologize to Chris\u2019 mother. I want to apologize to Chris\u2019 family. Specifically, Tony Rock. We had a great relationship. You know, Tony Rock was my man, and this is probably irreparable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The actor says he\u2019s spent the time since the 2022 Oscars reflecting on his actions, saying he knows that was not the \u201coptimal way\u201d to deal with insults. And in response to the question \u201cafter Jada rolled her eyes, did she tell you to do something?\u201d Smith decidedly said \u201cno.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made a choice on my own, from my own experiences from my own experiences, from my history with Chris. I\u2019m a human, and I made a mistake, and I\u2019m trying not to think of myself as a piece of sh*t. I would say to those people, I know it was confusing. I know it was shocking. But I promise you, I am deeply devoted and committed to putting light and love and joy into the world.
