You can get Photo Viewer back in Windows 10, though. It\u2019s just hidden.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How to do a Clean Install of Windows 10 the Easy Way<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you upgrade a PC running Windows 7 or 8.1 to Windows 10, Windows Photo Viewer will be available, and you can set it as your default photo viewer if you want. However, if you perform a clean installation of Windows 10 \u2014 or buy a PC with Windows 10 already on it \u2014 you can\u2019t access Photo Viewer at all. The interesting thing is that Photo Viewer is still there. It\u2019s just hidden, and you\u2019ll have to make a couple of Registry edits to have it show up. After you do that, you can then set it as your default photo viewer.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_update\"><p><strong>Update:<\/strong> Windows Photo Viewer wasn\u2019t cut from Windows 11, and you can make Windows Photo Viewer your default photo viewer on Windows 11.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Problem\"><\/span>The Problem<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>For whatever reason, Microsoft opted not to include the Registry keys that enable access to Windows Photo Viewer on Windows 10. Those keys are kept in place if you upgrade from a previous version of Windows, but they aren\u2019t created during the installation of Windows 10. Microsoft really wants you to open all those image files in its new Photos app instead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How to Set Your Default Apps in Windows 10<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you navigate to the Default apps pane in Settings,\u00a0you won\u2019t even see Photo Viewer as an option. The old \u201cDefault Programs\u201d Control Panel app isn\u2019t much help, either. Open it up, and you can only make Photo Viewer the default association for .tif and .tiff files \u2014 not other types of images.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>What Are DLL Files, and Why Is One Missing From My PC?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You also can\u2019t simply point image files at a specific .exe file to associate them with Photo Viewer, either. Photo Viewer is actually part of a DLL file named \u201cPhotoViewer.dll\u201d and doesn\u2019t have a separate executable file associated with it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-298285 \" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/img_55c9f1a85e354-650x332.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"The &quot;Default Apps&quot; window in the Settings app won't display Windows Photo Viewer by default. \" width=\"650\" height=\"332\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>So, how do you get Photo Viewer back? By firing up our old friend Registry Editor, of course. And after you do that, you can set it as your default photo app.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_One_Enable_Photo_Viewer_in_the_Registry\"><\/span>Step One: Enable Photo Viewer in the Registry<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We\u2019ll need to add the same registry entries that were present on Windows 7 and 8.1 and are still present on systems that upgraded from those old versions of Windows. To make things easy, we\u2019ve put together a Registry hack you can use to make these edits\u00a0quickly because they\u2019re a little cumbersome to make manually. Download and unzip the following file:<\/p>\n<p>Activate-Windows-Photo-Viewer-on-Windows-10<\/p>\n<p>Inside, you\u2019ll find two hacks. Run the \u201cActivate Windows Photo Viewer on Windows 10\u201d hack to create the keys and values in the Registry and activate Photo Viewer. And if you ever want to deactivate it, just run the \u201cDeactivate Windows Photo Viewer on Windows 10 (Default)\u201d hack. Of course, there\u2019s no real need to deactivate it in the Registry. You can always leave it available and just associate your image files with a different app.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-298283 \" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/wpv_1-650x236.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"236\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> A big thanks to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tenforums.com\/software-apps\/8550-unable-replace-photos-app-photo-viewer-default-10240-a-2.html\">nexus<\/a> over at TenForums for locating the required registry settings.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And remember \u2014 this step is only necessary if you\u2019re using a fresh Windows 10 system. If you upgraded from Windows 7 or 8.1, you should be able to go ahead and set Windows Photo Viewer as your default image-viewing application in all the usual ways.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_Two_Set_Windows_Photo_Viewer_as_Your_Default_Image_Viewer\"><\/span>Step Two: Set Windows Photo Viewer as\u00a0Your Default Image Viewer<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To associate an image file with Photo Viewer, right-click any type of image file \u2014 for example, a .png, .jpg, .gif, or .bmp file \u2014 and select Open With &gt; Choose Another App.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-298286 \" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/wpv_2.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"617\" height=\"603\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In the \u201cHow do you want to open this file?\u201d window, select Windows Photo Viewer. If you don\u2019t see it at first, scroll to the bottom of what\u2019s listed and click the \u201cMore apps\u201d option \u2014 it\u2019ll show up. Select the \u201cAlways use this app to open .___\u00a0files\u201d option, and then click \u201cOK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-298287 \" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/wpv_3.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"390\" height=\"517\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_update\"><p><strong>Update:<\/strong> If the \u201cChoose Another App\u201d option doesn\u2019t work for some reason, here\u2019s another way you can do it: First, right-click the type of image file you want to change (for example, a PNG, JPEG, GIF, or BMP file) and select \u201cProperties\u201d to open the Properties window. On the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> pane, click the \u201cChange\u201d button to the right of \u201cOpens With\u201d and select Windows Photo Viewer.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Windows Photo Viewer will now be the default image viewer for that type of image file. You\u2019ll need to repeat this process for each type of image file you want to use it with. In other words, whenever you open an image that opens in the Photos app, just close the Photos app and use the \u201cOpen with\u201d menu to associate that file type\u00a0with Windows Photo Viewer. You\u2019ll only have to do this the first time you open each new type of image file.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>Obviously, we can\u2019t guarantee that Microsoft will keep access to Photo Viewer around forever.
