Today, we\u2019re watching a video essay examining how Alfred Hitchcock <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roaches long takes.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>Far be it from us to disagree with a filmmaker as prolific as <strong>Alfred Hitchcock<\/strong>. But life is short. And if the oft-repeated (and seldom sourced) factoid that the director considered <em><strong>Rope <\/strong><\/em>a \u201cfailed experiment\u201d is true, we will have to disagree respectfully.<\/p>\n<p>Released in 1948 \u2014 one year after\u00a0<em>The Paradine Case\u00a0<\/em>and two years after\u00a0<em>Notorious<\/em> \u2014 tells of two upper-class Manhattan <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a>ites, Brandon (<strong>John Dall<\/strong>) and Phillip (<strong>Farley Granger<\/strong>), who set about committing the \u201cperfect\u201d murder. After strangling their college buddy David with the titular murder weapon, they stuff their lifeless associate\u2019s corpse into a chest and proceed to throw a dinner party before the deceased\u2019s blood can cool. David\u2019s parents, his fianc\u00e9, and the boys\u2019 beloved schoolteacher (Jimmy Stewart) are in attendance. As the night wears on, Brandon\u2019s confidence and conviction that they will be praised for their cunning and superiority begins to tip off their observant teacher. On the other end of the spectrum, Philip\u2019s anxiety has begun to peak through their fa\u00e7ade, threatening to give the boys up before the night is through.<\/p>\n<p>Rather famously, <em>Rope\u00a0<\/em>is constructed to\u00a0<em>feel\u00a0<\/em>as though it was filmed in a single take (in reality, there are 10 shots, 11 if you count the opening credits). Superficially, this choice can feel like (a) creative experimentation on Hitchcock\u2019s part and\/or (b) a way of preserving the spirit of Patrick Hamilton\u2019s play (itself based on the real-life murder case of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/leopold-and-loebs-criminal-minds-996498\/\">Leopold and Loeb<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>But, as the video essay below succinctly points out, <i>Rope\u2019s<\/i>\u00a0\u201csingle shot\u201d effect is more than just a gimmick \u2014 it\u2019s a compelling vessel for Hitch\u2019s calling card: suspense.
