arrest of George Floyd sparked an unprecedented, nationwide response that\u2019s included peaceful protests, violent clashes involving cops, incidents of looting \u2014 and demands from activists to \u201cdefund the police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response, Mayor Bill de Blasio on Sunday pledged to shift an unspecified amount of the NYPD\u2019s $6 billion annual budget to \u201cyouth initiatives and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> services,\u201d saying, \u201cPolicing matters for sure, but the investments in our youth are foundational.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti also said last week that he would cut the city\u2019s police budget by as much $150 million to to help fund $250 million for youth jobs, health initiatives and \u201cpeace centers\u201d \u2014 reversing an April plan to increase spending on the LAPD by 7 percent.<\/p>\n<p>And in Minneapolis \u2014 the scene of Floyd\u2019s horrific, caught-on-camera killing on May 25 \u2014 a veto-proof majority of the City Council has vowed to go even further, with nine members vowing to dismantle and replace the city\u2019s police department through legislation that could be introduced as early as Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is clear that our system of policing is not keeping our communities safe,\u201d council President Lisa Bender said during a rally Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur efforts at incremental reform have failed, period.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_the_idea_behind_defunding_the_police\"><\/span>What\u2019s the idea behind defunding the police?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure would reduce public spending on police departments, potentially resulting in fewer numbers of cops and more money available to spend on other services that advocates believe would lead to reductions in crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just about taking away money from the police, it\u2019s about reinvesting those dollars into black communities,\u201d Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors told Boston\u2019s WBUR radio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCommunities that have been deeply divested from, communities that, some have never felt the impact of having true resources. And so we have to reconsider what we\u2019re resourcing. I\u2019ve been saying we have an economy of punishment over an economy of care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MPD150, a Minneapolis-based activist group that seeks to make the city \u201cpolice free,\u201d envisions a \u201clong transition process\u201d during which \u201cwe may need a small specialized class of public servants whose job it is to respond to violent crimes\u201d but eventually \u201cget to a place where people won\u2019t need to rob banks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now, cops don\u2019t just respond to violent crimes; they make needless traffic stops, arrest petty drug users, and engage in a wide range of \u2018broken windows policing\u2019 behaviors that only serve to keep more people under the thumb of the criminal justice system,\u201d according to the group\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p>During Sunday night\u2019s episode of HBO\u2019s \u201cLast Week Tonight with John Oliver,\u201d the host made an impassioned plea in favor of the idea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefunding the police doesn\u2019t mean we eliminate cops and succumb to \u2018The Purge,\u2019\u201d Oliver said, invoking the 2103 horror film in which Americans can legally commit crimes one night each year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead it\u2019s about moving away from a narrow conception of public safety that relies on policing and punishment, and investing in a community\u2019s actual safety net, things like stable housing, mental health services and community organization.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_do_leading_officials_stand\"><\/span>Where do leading officials stand?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15804690\"><img alt=\"Donald Trump\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"661\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>President Trump expressed unequivocal opposition during a meeting with police officials from across the country at the White House on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe won\u2019t be defunding our police. We won\u2019t be dismantling our police, and there\u2019s not going to be any disbanding of our police. Our police have been letting us live in peace,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump told a roundtable of nationwide police leaders on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s presumptive Democratic challenger, former Vice President Joe Biden, also said Monday that he was opposed to defunding police, but told the \u201cCBS Evening <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>,\u201d \u201cI support conditioning federal aid to police, based on whether or not they meet certain basic standards of decency and honorableness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd, in fact, are able to demonstrate they can protect the community and everybody in the community,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Congressional Democrats introduced legislation to reform police practices on Monday following an event at which most kneeled for eight minutes and 46 seconds, echoing the amount of time that then-Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin kept his knee on Floyd\u2019s neck.<\/p>\n<p>House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) said she could support \u201crebalancing some of our funding\u201d to ensure that mental-health problems and other matters was be addressed \u201cmore directly\u201d than sending cops to deal with them.<\/p>\n<p>But during an <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earance on \u201cThe View,\u201d Sen. Kamala Harris (D-California), a potential Democratic vice-presidential candidate, refused to give co-host Meghan McCain a yes-or-no answer on the subject.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have confused the idea that to achieve safety, you put more cops on the street instead of understanding to achieve safe and healthy communities, you put more resources into the public education system of those communities, into affordable housing, into home ownership, into access to capital for small businesses, access to health care regardless of how much money people have,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_likely_to_happen_in_New_York_City\"><\/span>What\u2019s likely to happen in New York City?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15804680\"><img alt=\"A protester in Times Square holds up a handmade sign that reads, \"Defund The NYPD\"\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"661\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea offered support for de Blasio\u2019s plan to move money out of the department\u2019s budget.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo help the kids of our city, I\u2019m 1,000% behind shifting some funding from the police to youth programs,\u201d the top cop tweeted early Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s incumbent upon all of us to dig down and do what\u2019s needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shea also doubled down on his support later in the day, telling Fox News anchor Neil Cavuto, \u201cI think it\u2019s crime-fighting, it\u2019s just crime-fighting in a better way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NYPD sources have suggested that officials will likely target overtime pay, and warned that it could harm investigations and other law-enforcement efforts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGuys are all on edge in the department because they rely on overtime,\u201d one source said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t a job where you work banking hours. You can\u2019t work eight-hour days when you are trying to solve a case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Andrew Cuomo has also said that last week\u2019s looting amid the protests over Floyd\u2019s killing \u201cshook people in the city to the core.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t need police?
