But it <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>s at extremely high speeds (<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roximately 15,700 mph in low Earth orbit), so even a tiny piece could hit spacecraft and cause damage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/station\/news\/orbital_debris.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to NASA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there are approximately 23,000 pieces of debris larger than a softball orbiting the Earth. The Department of Defense\u2019s global Space Surveillance Network (SSN) sensors track over 27,000 pieces of orbital debris.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it\u2019s not just a problem of legacy space tech debris from decades ago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2020, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sdo.esoc.esa.int\/environment_report\/Space_Environment_Report_latest.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over 60%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of launches to low-Earth orbit resulted in abandoned rocket bodies in orbit. It also creates a collision hazard for space aircraft and satellites. Just a speck of paint traveling at 17,000 miles per hour can cause catastrophic damage to a satellite.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imagine a world without operational satellites. Weather tracking, live event broadcasts, stock market analytics, and ATMs would drive to a halt.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, according to researchers, the space junk that survives the heat of atmospheric reentry in the form of debris is potentially lethal. In fact, it poses serious risks on land, at sea, and to airplanes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_risk_of_being_hit_is_increasing\"><\/span><strong>The risk of being hit is increasing\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canadian academics recently published <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41550-022-01718-8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/natastron\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nature Astronomy<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> predicting a 10% chance of one or more casualties due to flying debris hitting a person (or infrastructure leading to injury) over a decade. The researchers note small rocket pieces crashing into an aircraft could cause hundreds of casualties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, in 2016, SpaceX abandoned the second stage of a rocket in orbit. It <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/spaceflight101.com\/falcon-9-jcsat-16\/spacex-rocket-parts-rain-down-over-indonesia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reentered one month later over Indonesia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with two refrigerator-sized fuel tanks reaching the ground intact. Luckily it didn\u2019t hit houses, animals, or people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wheres_the_space_police_when_you_need_them\"><\/span><strong>Where\u2019s the space police when you need them?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internationally, there is no cle<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ar and widely-agreed casualty risk threshold for falling space junk. Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, is president of one company in the sector: the recently-launched <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mission.privateer.com\/#home\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Privateer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this year, it released a space tracking app called \u201cWayfinder.\u201d It visualizes and tracks orbiting satellites and space debris based on data from US Space Command, Planet Labs, JSC Vimpel (Russia), and SeeSat-L.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s helpful to space fans as well as researchers and lobbyists wanting to agitate for a response to the problem of space debris.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how do we deal with this monumental problem?
