August 4,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.freddiemac.com\/pmms\" class=\"icon none\">according to data released<\/a>\u00a0by Freddie Mac on Thursday. That\u2019s down 31 basis points from the previous week \u2014 one basis point is equal to one hundredth of a percentage point, or 1% of 1%.<\/p>\n<p> Rates have dipped below 5% for the first time since April.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       The average rate on the 15-year fixed-rate mortgage fell 32 basis points over the past week to 4.26%. The 5-year Treasury-indexed hybrid adjustable-rate mortgage averaged 4.25%, down 4 basis points from the prior week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMortgage rates remained volatile due to the tug of war between inflationary pressures and a clear slowdown in economic growth,\u201d Sam Khater, chief economist at Freddie Mac, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the \u201chigh uncertainty\u201d around inflation and recession fears will \u201clikely cause rates to remain variable,\u201d particularly as the Federal Reserve weighs further moves to address the macroeconomic picture.<\/p>\n<p>As of the second quarter of this year, there was $758 billion in newly originated mortgage loans, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorkfed.org\/microeconomics\/hhdc\/background.html\" class=\"icon none\">the New York Fed<\/a>, with 65% of loans originated to borrowers with credit scores of over 760, which is considered very good.<\/p>\n<p>The yield on the 10-year Treasury note<br \/>\n        TMUBMUSD10Y,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.000%\" channel=\"\" class=\"\">2.689%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       was trading above 2.7% in morning trading. <\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Got thoughts on the housing market? <\/strong><\/em>undefined<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Learn how to shake up your financial routine at the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/moneyfestival.marketwatch.com\/\" class=\"icon none\">Best New Ideas in Money Festival<\/a>\u00a0on Sept. 21 and Sept. 22 in New York.
