The software is still included in the operating system, but it is completely disabled. Luckily for us, there are workarounds. In Windows 10, Windows Photo Viewer could be re-enabled using a registry hack \u2014- it turns out that the exact same registry hack works on Windows 11, too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>The 7 Best Registry Hacks for Windows 11<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Download<\/a> the zipped REG files\u00a0using the below link, and then open the ZIP archive in your favorite archiving program. File Explorer will do fine if you don\u2019t have a third-party program, since it is perfectly capable of extracting ZIP files.<\/p>\n<p>Download Activate-Windows-Photo-Viewer-on-Windows-11<\/p>\n<p>Double-click the ZIP file named \u201cActivate Windows Photo Viewer 11\u201d to open it up, then look for the REG key named \u201cActivate Windows Photo Viewer on Windows 11.reg.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-822171\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/activate-windows-photo-viewer.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"216\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Double-click the REG key, and you\u2019ll get a popup that warns you about the security risks of adding registry keys.<\/p>\n<p>You need to be careful with REG files, especially if they don\u2019t come from a trusted source, since they can be used maliciously. If you\u2019re skeptical of a REG file \u2014 and you <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly should be \u2014 you can check out what it does yourself. Just open it in a plain text editor, like Notepad, and take a look at the registry entries it changes. If it isn\u2019t im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely obvious what the REG file does, and it usually isn\u2019t, you can always look up the relevant keys on the internet. The Windows Registry is well documented, so it shouldn\u2019t be too hard to figure out what the entries in the REG file do.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, the REG file comes from us and has been tested extensively over the course of many years, so you can rest assured it isn\u2019t malicious. It\u2019ll show up in all of the usual places where you\u2019d find a photo viewing app, like the Right-click \u201cOpen With\u201d list and the Default Programs menu.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Set_Windows_Photo_Viewer_as_the_Default_Photo_Viewer_on_Windows_11\"><\/span>How to Set Windows Photo Viewer as the Default Photo Viewer on Windows 11<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Windows 11 comes packaged with the Photos app as the default app for almost every image format. If you want to change it to Windows Photo Viewer, there are a few convenient ways to do it.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Right-Click_an_Image_File_to_Change_The_Default_Program\"><\/span>Right-Click an Image File to Change The Default Program<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>You don\u2019t really need to go rifling through the Settings app to change what applications are used to open any given file type. The options are built into the right-click context menu.<\/p>\n<p>Right-click a PNG file, go to \u201cOpen with,\u201d and then click \u201cChoose Another App.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-822137\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/opewith4.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"434\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Scroll through the list of applications until you see Windows Photo Viewer on the list. You\u2019ll probably need to click \u201cMore Apps\u201d to get it to appear. You\u2019ll need to repeat these steps for every image format (like JPGs or BMPs) you want to open in Windows Photo Viewer. Luckily, there aren\u2019t too many common ones, so it isn\u2019t too much work.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Use_the_Default_Apps_Window\"><\/span>Use the Default Apps Window<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Windows 11 has a centralized way of managing the file formats that are associated with applications. It is a really convenient way to set your default apps. Scroll down, click \u201cMore Apps,\u201d and then keep scrolling until you reach Windows Photo Viewer. Click it once to select it, then hit \u201cOK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll need to do this for every image format you want to associate with Windows Photo Viewer, but unlike the other ways of changing application-format association, you don\u2019t actually need an image to right-click.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, just because Windows Photo Viewer is included in Windows 11 doesn\u2019t mean it is fully supported. It is older software, and you may encounter problems with it in the future.
