Fever dreams. And it was, it <em>really<\/em> was.<\/p>\n<p>The off-Broadway cuckoo camp-fest at the Asylum in Chelsea is, by a nautical mile, the funniest musical in town right now and is built on an unsinkable idea: It tells the story of the 1997 movie \u201cTitanic\u201d using the songs of French-Canadian chanteuse Celine Dion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--review alignleft\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n        <span class=\"inline-module--review__eyebrow widget-heading-semi__label\"><br \/>\n            Theater review      <\/span><\/p>\n<p>        One hour, 40 minutes with no intermission. At Asylum NYC, 307 West 26th St.\n    <\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s <em>scandaleux<\/em> that no one has ever thought of this mashup before.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After all, no singer is more closely tied to a (non-musical) movie of this scale than Celine is to James Cameron\u2019s \u201cTitanic\u201d \u2014 the two feed off each other \u2014 and the rest of her popular catalog has the same emotional heft and theatrical narratives as the Oscar-winning film\u2019s signature song \u201cMy Heart Will Go On.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And co-writers Marla Mindelle, Constantine Rousouli and Tye Blue cleverly toss in a boatload of \u2019em wherever they can.<\/p>\n<p>When Jack and Rose first meet on deck, as Rose is considering throwing herself overboard, they sing a duet of \u201cTaking Chances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you say to taking chances? What do you say to jumping off the edge?\u201d they go. Sure!<\/p>\n<p>She pops in every so often to gloriously upstage everybody else.<\/p>\n<p>Mindelle\u2019s performance is a sensational, hilarious and deranged turn that rises above a 2 a.m. Las Vegas impression. Yes, if you are a big Celine fan like, <em>ahem<\/em>, a certain tabloid <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>paper critic is, you\u2019ll howl at the actress\u2019 borrowed Celine-isms from old viral <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube<\/a> videos and banter from the \u201cA New Day Live\u201d album. But the performance \u2014 conversational, occasionally improvised and quite affectionate \u2014 is more than mockery.<\/p>\n<p>Most impressively, the actress somehow recreates Dion\u2019s superstar energy in a low-budget show performed in a basement full of pillars that smell of Ajax. Rousouli plays Jack as an aw-shucks dumb hunk, which pairs well with Alex Ellis\u2019 agonized Jan Brady-style Rose. John Riddle\u2019s\u00a0Cal is Billy Zane if Billy Zane went to Fire Island, and Ryan Duncan turns Ruth, Rose\u2019s uptight mom, into a Joan Crawford who\u2019s just spotted a wire hanger.<\/p>\n<p>All of them made made me smile straight to the end, which, well, did not happen during the film \u201cTitanic.\u201d Director Tye Blue\u2019s staging, kitschy as it must be, is also substantial and oddly grand for a venue that hosted a comedy night minutes after \u201cTitanique\u201d ended.<\/p>\n<p>What the show could use is one paralyzing musical moment, sans humor, that knocks us over. It comes awfully close with a gorgeous full-cast rendition of \u201cThe Prayer,\u201d which Dion often duets with Andrea Bocelli \u2014 I even saw one audience member clutch his heart during it \u2014 but then it cuts off abruptly.\u00a0A moment of serenity, here and there, would make the laughs even bigger.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, as it is, \u201cTitanique\u201d is the ideal commercial off-Broadway show. It knows who its audience is \u2014 the sort of people who choose to listen to the eight-minute version of \u201cIt\u2019s All Coming Back To Me Now,\u201d and then click replay \u2014 and works hard to shamelessly entertain them. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Right now, the musical plays through Sept. 25.
