\n City kids could be taught by teachers from other schools during remote classes this upcoming year, Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza said Monday.<\/p>\n

With school populations split up to enable social<\/a> distancing, principals will struggle to staff an increased number of classes with what will likely be depleted teacher rosters.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur goal has always been that students that are in remote learning will have teachers from their school,\u201d Carranza said at a press conference alongside Mayor Bill de Blasio. \u201cObviously that is our goal. But that is not a guarantee. Because it\u2019s going to depend on how many teachers at that school are in remote mode, how many are in-person learning.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thus far, 26 percent of city families opted for a fully remote format and that number is expected to grow over the opening weeks and months of the school year.<\/p>\n

The remaining 74 percent will alternate between distance and classroom learning one to three days per week depending on an individual school\u2019s chosen model.<\/p>\n

Roughly 15 percent of city teachers have sought medical COVID-19 exemptions and will work from home if app<\/a>roved.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously if you have less students per class you need additional staffing,\u201d Carranza said. \u201cSo we are in the throes of all of those detailed planning processes.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Blasio said that staffing issues won\u2019t clarify until the new year begins.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of this will be determined in the actual doing of it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

De Blasio also sought to allay concerns about coronavirus protective gear in the country\u2019s largest school system and said the city has stocked up on key items \u2014 including 4 million masks.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhatever our schools need they\u2019re going to have,\u201d he insisted.<\/p>\n

The Department of Education will introduce a hotline for principals in need of additional items.<\/p>\n

Also speaking Monday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo reiterated that the state retains the ability to shutter any school it deems unsafe.<\/p>\n
