He avoided gimmicks, hype, signature calls, forced belly laughs, endless stats and hollering over nothing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He also could distinguish between radio and TV assignments, thus he famously knew when to speak and when to allow the pictures to be worth all the words.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why Scully may be the only voice of any sport to be cherished for what he didn\u2019t say.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And he much preferred to work alone. Just you and Vin at a baseball game. West Coast baseball fans often called it \u201ca bond.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Poor Johnny Bench was assigned to call four World <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Series<\/a> with Scully on CBS Radio, 1990-93. Nothing personal, but Scully felt Bench\u2019s presence to be just \u201cbig-name\u201d superfluous, thus they produced the between-pitches sounds of awkward.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It was baffling to hear Michael Kay, during YES\u2019s Mariners-Yankees on Wednesday, recall Scully, a fellow Fordham and school radio station WFUV alum, as the best. Prior to Scully\u2019s passing, it was equally odd to read that John Sterling idolized Scully.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"697\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/Obit-Mourning-Scully-Dodgers-Baseball.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Vin Scully\" class=\"wp-image-23339930\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/Obit-Mourning-Scully-Dodgers-Baseball.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/Obit-Mourning-Scully-Dodgers-Baseball.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/Obit-Mourning-Scully-Dodgers-Baseball.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Vin Scully<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Kay and Sterling have been career-reliant on word gimmickry and \u201csignature calls,\u201d sustaining them even as they\u2019ve grown repetitive, old, tired and a counterproductive exercise in foolish and stubborn self-deference.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Sterling\u2019s case, his long career has been slathered in self-smitten signature calls so often dead wrong they\u2019ve become lampooned as unintended farce.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>So why would Kay and Sterling choose to be antithetical to Scully, if they most admired his style?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A gracious man \u2014 on Dodgers stationery, he\u2019d hand-write a thank you for every admiration he read here \u2014 I was once privileged, or just an invited eavesdropper, to hear Scully at his angriest, as he couldn\u2019t have possibly been angrier.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This was after Detroit won the fifth and last game of the 1984 Tigers-Padres World Series, the last Series to include a day game. Shucks, nearly 40 years ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Scully, who called the Series for NBC, was asked to call after that game in Detroit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As we began speaking, Scully noticed that a riot had erupted below him, just outside Tiger Stadium. He didn\u2019t cuss, but yikes, was he angry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He was also an unapologetic patriot. At a 2017 symposium, he was asked how he felt about NFL national anthem knee-takers. He said he was disgusted by them, said he\u2019d never watch another NFL game. He had the audacity to protest the protesters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>He was soon ridiculed and dismissed as an \u201cOld Retired White Man\u201d on a popular but reckless, often dishonest and vulgar sports website featuring cheap-shot artists who made bad guesses to mischaracterize and defame. That\u2019s how to succeed in modern <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> business without really trying.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And Scully wasn\u2019t shy to note that the country was in illogical decline.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, New Yorkers in Scully\u2019s post-Brooklyn years among the 67 \u2014 sixty-seven! \u2014 he spent calling Dodgers games, still point to his Game 6 call of the unfathomable Red Sox-Mets World Series. The call?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After a perfect delivery of the play-by-play, there was none.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Only a sustained, glorious silence. He allowed NBC cameras to capture the extraordinary. Scully didn\u2019t try to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ly his historical stamp. He was so in-tune and on-time with every game he called that here he\u2019s best remembered and revered for saying nothing!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t waste his wind trying to sell cheap thrills to audiences that knew better. Few current TV and radio executives would find that acceptable. Vin Scully would be disqualified.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Watson_ban_slap_in_face_to_decency\"><\/span>Watson ban slap in face to decency<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Deshaun Watson case again raises the question as to why nothing can be what it is. It must come replete with political, racial, gender, financial and public relations considerations and intrigues. Matters of wrong versus right become matters of who and how much.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sue Robinson, the judge assigned to recommend Watson\u2019s punishment after he settled lawsuits with 23 women who accused him of sexual misconduct including assault \u2014 and after he signed a guaranteed $230 million deal to play QB for the Browns while the charges had not been adjudicated \u2014 determined that a six-game NFL suspension should do the trick.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/Browns-Football-1.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Deshaun Watson at Browns training camp.\" class=\"wp-image-23340038\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/Browns-Football-1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=2048 2048w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/Browns-Football-1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1536 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/Browns-Football-1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/Browns-Football-1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Deshaun Watson at Browns training camp.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Question for Her Honor: Had she settled even two or three cases of sexual misconduct filed against her, would she still have a bench to be suspended from? No, she\u2019d be out, gone, disgraced \u2014 like most working folks who don\u2019t play QB in the NFL.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The latest, most curious thing about this saga is that the NFLPA, which defends all rotten behavior by NFL players \u2014 even if their victims are other NFLPA members \u2014 seemed to know exactly what was coming against Watson. And that it would not be much.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>So it issued a preemptive legal threat to the NFL just before Robinson\u2019s anemic ruling became public:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA former Federal Judge \u2014 appointed jointly by the NFLPA and NFL \u2014 held a full and fair hearing, has read thousands of pages of investigative comments and reviewed arguments from both sides impartially.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery player, owner, business partner and stakeholder deserves to know that out process is legitimate and will not be tarnished based on the whims of the League office.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is why, regardless of her decision, Deshaun and the NFLPA will stand by her ruling and we call on the NFL to do the same.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Seems a case of betting the horse race after it was over.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the NFL, as a matter of public relations and commercial pressures \u2014 follow the money! \u2014 couldn\u2019t possibly abide by such a farcical ruling, thus they appealed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Roger Goodell, who panders rather than leads, should now hit Watson with what reflects 23 settled sexual malfeasance cases: an open-ended lifetime suspension subject to annual review. Then let the NFLPA take it to court.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While in court, an NFL lawyer could ask the NFLPA what it considers a fair punishment for a man who made financial settlements with 23 women who had accused him of sexual misconduct and\/or assault.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And if the NFLPA\u2019s answer is, \u201cA six-game suspension,\u201d the judge might threaten a contempt-of-court charge for such an absurd, disingenuous answer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Historic_swing_only_on_stream\"><\/span>Historic swing only on stream?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Reader Dan Manley sees a bad moon a-risin\u2019:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s Friday night, Sept. 23, Yankees home against the Red Sox.
