Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ing the mysterious pre-screening of reporters for one of President Biden\u2019s large indoor events in the East Room \u2014 weeks after\u00a073 reporters\u00a0signed a letter demanding an end to the procedure.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in Biden\u2019s presidency, roughly 50 journalists, including print reporters, TV correspondents and photographers, were let into the East Room without discrimination based on the outlet they represent \u2014 a departure from the non-transparent screening practice that has outraged the White House press corps for more than a year.<\/p>\n<p>The East Room is the White House\u2019s largest indoor space \u2014 nearly 3,000 square feet \u2014 and Tuesday\u2019s event was \u201copen press,\u201d meaning that any journalist on the White House grounds was allowed to attend.<\/p>\n<p>The easing of press access to the East Room occurred more than 14 months after the much smaller White House briefing room ended COVID-19 attendance caps and returned to full capacity in June 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The prescreening of reporters for Biden\u2019s events is widely understood to be a way to shape the questions he gets asked and no objective criteria for selection has ever been divulged.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/1413877186.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Brady Press Briefing Room\" class=\"wp-image-23395512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/1413877186.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=2048 2048w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/1413877186.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1536 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/1413877186.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/1413877186.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>About 50 journalists including print reporters, TV correspondents and photographers were let inside the East Room on Tuesday without discrimination based on the outlet they represent.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Getty Images\/Chip Somodevilla<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Biden did not answer shouted questions at the Tuesday event, including about the FBI\u2019s Monday raid on former President Donald Trump\u2019s residence in Palm Beach, Fla. Instead, Biden signed documents approving the admission to NATO of Finland and Sweden and departed after briefly mingling with guests.<\/p>\n<p>Reporters excluded from most other Biden events murmured their approval of the restoration of access norms for the East Room, but the change apparently won\u2019t be a complete aboutface. On Tuesday night, the White House indicated that a Wednesday bill-signing event in the East Room would again be limited to reporters chosen via the prior non-transparent process.<\/p>\n<p>The White House did not respond to The Post\u2019s request for comment and the Tuesday status change went unmentioned by Biden\u2019s spokespeople aside from being noted on the daily press schedule.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear if other venues traditionally open to all journalists, such as the large auditorium in the White House-adjacent Eisenhower Executive Office Building, will resume open press access as well.<\/p>\n<p>In late June, 73 reporters signed a letter demanding an end to the pre-screening of reporters let into Biden\u2019s events after it resulted in journalists from some large <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> outlets, including The Post, going up to seven months without being admitted to an indoor event.<\/p>\n<p>Senior journalists, including leaders of the White House Correspondents\u2019 Association, struggled for more than a year to understand or abolish the pre-screening \u2014 warning that curating the group of reporters allowed within earshot of Biden would set a troubling precedent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is blocked today may be different from who is blocked tomorrow \u2014 and since access curbs tend to stick around, it\u2019s a worthwhile fight,\u201d Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> critic Erik Wemple<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2022\/07\/07\/white-house-reporters-access-biden\/\"> wrote in a July column<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Correspondents Association\u2019s outgoing president, Steven Portnoy of CBS News Radio, helped lead the June protest letter, which was written by veteran reporter Brian Karem of Salon and circulated by a reporter from The Post.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Former association president Tom DeFrank of National Journal told The Post he signed the letter because it was important to stop the erosion of historical norms. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving covered the White House since June of 1968 as a Newsweek intern, I\u2019ve seen a troubling erosion in access that was once routine,\u201d DeFrank said at the time.<\/p>\n<p>A number of high-profile journalists also supported the protest letter, including CNN\u2019s Kaitlan Collins, CBS\u2019s Ed O\u2019Keefe, Fox News\u2019 Jacqui Heinrich, Axios\u2019 Jonathan Swan, The New York Times\u2019 Peter Baker and Maggie Haberman, former ABC anchor and White House reporter Sam Donaldson, TheGrio\u2019s April Ryan, Newsmax\u2019s James Rosen, Gray Television\u2019s Jon Decker and Al Jazeera\u2019s Kimberly Halkett.<\/p>\n<p>White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at a June briefing that\u00a0\u201cI actually don\u2019t know\u201d\u00a0how the selection process worked, but denied it amounted to \u201cblacklisting\u201d of certain outlets or reporters. One journalist who signed the letter said he was told by a prominent press officer that a random\u00a0number\u00a0generator\u00a0determined who got in \u2014 though that wouldn\u2019t explain why some news outlets went so long without selection.<\/p>\n<p>Prior explanations offered by White House staff to reporters indicated the process was \u201cfirst come, first served,\u201d which was anecdotally debunked, or that there was some sort of rotation in effect for outlets based on their size.<\/p>\n<p>The protest letter called out the lack of clarify and urged the White House to change course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current method of allowing a limited number of reporters into these events is not only restrictive and antithetical to the concept of a free press, but it has been done without any transparent process into how reporters are selected to cover these events,\u201d\u00a0the\u00a0protest letter\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe continued inability of the White House to be candid and transparent about the selection process for reporters attf his remarks undermines President Biden\u2019s credibility when he says he is a defender of the First Amendment,\u201d it continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe incongruity of these restrictions underscores the belief by many reporters that the administration seeks to limit access to the president by anyone outside of the pool, or anyone who might ask a question the administration doesn\u2019t want asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet us be candid,\u201d the letter went on. \u201cOur job is not to be liked, nor is it to be concerned about whether or not you like what we ask. Reporters\u2019 ability to question the most powerful man in our government shouldn\u2019t be discretionary. The administration\u2019s continued efforts to limit access to the president cannot be defended.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter added, \u201cAny notion that space is \u2018limited\u2019 is not supported by the fact that every other president before Biden (including Trump) allowed full access to the very same spaces without making us fill out a request form prior to admittance\u2026 We ask you to see to it that the protocols are changed back to the access norms to which we are accustomed.\u201d\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
